I am trying to find out what USAF fighter squadrons were stationed at Erding, Germany in the Spring of 1950. Also the aircraft they used.
Any suggestions on how this info can be found would be much appreciated.
TIA

For what it’s worth, USAF fighters in the region in 1950 would have been limited to just a few types:
North American F-51 Mustang
Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star.Possibly, F-47 Thunderbolts (but unlikely).
The date is too late for other WWII types and too early for later jets like the F-86.
According to one of my F-84 books, USAFE didn’t reveive its first straight-wing Thunderjet until the summer of 1950. The only mention of Erding in the book is a photo of a crashed Thunderjet being delivered there by truck in 1951. That certainly supports the depot nature of the base.
A SAC escort unit with the jets deployed to Germany in late 1950, but that was to Furstenfieldbruk.
Thanks for looking and the suggestions. F-47’s have been mentioned to me before and am investigating further.

Try asking on the website for Scramble, the Dutch enthusiasts site.
Thanks for the suggestion will investigate that.

To scrabble aircraft, in for maintenance, for possible combat again Russian fighters would be precarious.
Agreed. Unlikely to have combat ready aircraft available. Certainly not armed.

When you find out you will need to edit the Wiki then.
What is the source of your information that contradicts its use only for maintenance?

On 24 March 1950, 3 Czech DC3, landed at Erding having escaped from Czechoslovakia. A detailed account is here:
http://fcafa.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/they-flew-to-exile-1950/
Vit Angetter the pilot of the 1st DC3 to land, explained to Col. Park Holland, the US base commander about the other 2 DC3’s, and US fighter aircraft were scrabbled from Erding. This was seen by Angetter who was a former fighter pilot. They escorted the 3rd DC3, flown by my father, back to Erding and the US fighters also landed at Erding.
To scramble aircraft, in for maintenance, for possible combat again Russian fighters would be precarious.
Also the Czech ex-RAF airmen were initially kept at Erding and talked to the US escort pilots, during that talk it was confirmed their role at Erding was as combat pilots.

Another clue in the puzzle.

Black Widows were mothballed at Erding after the war.
In March 1950. three planes were hijacked to Erding from Czechoslovakia.

In March 1950 a USAF fighter unit was based there and it is the aircraft they flew that I am interested in.

Originally developed as an Air Depot in the early postwar years, the mission of Erding Air Base (later Station) was to provided depot-level maintenance of USAFE and NATO fighters. With the opening of Châteauroux-Déols Air Base, France in 1953, Erding became a satellite depot.
No based squadrons. Maintenance only it would seem.
