How common is this?

An operating aircraft with only one winglet?

Yes, I can. If one wingtip sustains damage it can be removed and the aircraft operated to base for repair with a performance penalty. The removal of both wingtips gives a performance penalty which is considered too large so therefore cannot be done.

Going back to the five engined SAA 747 its not uncommon for the airlines to send replacment engines attached to another aircraft and quite a few of the modern airliners have a hard piont inboard of #2 engine for this purpose.

As to the winglets they are basically a device to reduce drag from the wingtip and thus increase range and efficency of the lifting surfaces in the wingtip area so the only detremental effect would be a few less miles on the range. certainly the extra lift on the other wing would, be compensated for by a little trim adn thefly by wire on then that have it .

Cash crunch? Till back in the 1980’s cars were sold with just one outside mirror, the other one being optional … 😀
