Don’t really remember but suspect like so many others I landed here courtesy of Flypast, although it could equally have been accidentally when trawling the web for information.
Think it would have been inevitable eventually, for despite being a member for only just over a year, I am glad that I found you lot as it feels like home, being in one of a great international community of likeminded individuals, who I like to think of as friends, although we may never have met.
Couldn’t really put it into words better than Randy Newman in one of his songs:-
”This is my country. These are my people. This is a world I understand”.
Wicked Willip :diablo:

This raises another question, how did you come across ‘Flypast’ in the first place. I must have been living in Braintree at the time it came out, which was only every 2 months initially, it couldn’t have been advertised on the telly, so I presume it must have been an interesting looking publication that I happened to spot on the shelves in ‘Martins’, remember them. Whether they had a bit of a campaign, I don’t know, but I’ve still got that first edition in perfect condition.
I haven’t missed a single issue since, is that a record ?
If it is, i’ll qualify for top prize also ๐

I blame flypast. First they lure me into buying the magazine since 1983, then get me hooked on aircraft recovery and then building a Halifax cockpit.
it’s not fair, who”s going to pay for those psychiatrist bills anyway….

Since I was 11 years old I have a huge love of aviation and I found my way here with a little help from Google a few years ago. Google is your friend!
I have been making almost daily visits since I first registered on the 25th February 2006 and through this site I’ve found out that my namesake, Chipmunk WP840, is still alive and well. ๐

Anyway, as for the Forum website, I used to look on the Flypast site for airshow info and inevitably found the Forum, can’t find my first question, but ever since, I’ve been mucking about on here, despite the consequences sometimes, it finds the parts the other things can’t reach, and some of the stories are really stunning.

I had asked basically the same question a few months ago over on the ‘General Discussion’ board…
I’ve been an ‘aerogeek’ my entire life, yes, I live, eat, breath aviation… well, I have tamed it down a bit in the past few year (seems the friends don’t necessarily share the same enthusiasm I do).
How did I get here??, I was hunting for information and reference material on the world’s military aerobatic teams (for my illustrations), found the ‘Modern Military’ page, posted a thread and then went exploring and found a number of new friends with similar interests. Never really knew this board as the ‘Flypast’ forum – yes I have read and purchased Flypast – but to me this is the ‘Historic’ board and I am certainly happy to dwell here. The depth of knowledge and experience ‘over here’ far surpasses the pettiness of the ‘other side’, easily making this ‘the’ source for informed commentary and shared knowledge.

A fundamental interest in aviation related historical questions.
It all started with two different issues
– the history of the DH.114 Heron and the Saunders ST-27/28
– the history of the company that manufactured the EDO floats

I ended up here when I was searching for stuff on Vickers viscounts, Carveairs and Southend airport ๐

Mr Ellis himself pointed me this way..
at legends last year I took my son for his first ever flight in a classic wings Rapide – another passenger took some snaps of us and said he would mail them on, they got to me and I was trying to see if I could trace him – I never got the snaps which was a shame but I enjoy some of the chit chat etc on here.
I work in the service industry for an electronics company and we are often “threatened” by a forum posting and some of the stuff thats posted is just trash and lies – we keep an eye on them but can’t respond for obvious reasons – generally I find this one very civilised – sea vixen discussions not withstanding !

I have been a reader of Flypast for a number of years, but I “landed” here after surfing the ‘Net for local air crashes.

It’s all in my profile, being brought up near ‘Biggin’ in the ’60s does that to a lad.
I didn’t see my dad again after I left the UK in the 70’s but we kept in touch and in the latter years, before his death, he used to send his Flypasts to me, by sea mail. It is not very suprising that I now subscribe (actually the wife does on my behalf ‘cos she has the knowhow and the right cards).

Grew up near Yeovilton in the 80s, where a certain Swordfish, Firefly, Sea Hawk and two Sea Furies were based.
…oh and Hunters too ๐

Hi,
I had always been interested in aviation as a kid. I’d done Duxford once since getting married, but it was not until I came across Flypast in WHSmith’s on Kings Cross station one day in April 2001 that I got re-bitten by the aviation gremlin. It made the journey to York much more interesting than usual.
As ‘Antique Sewing Machine and Bobbin Collectors Monthly’ had folded and ‘Gasometers International’ never had anything interesting in it anymore, I decided that I needed a new subscription – after all it is nice to have something other than a bill drop through the letterbox once in a while.
Seeing as work gave me a nice PC with internet access :D, I could surf to the website and found the Forum.
And my forum name….partly my job and partly the a/c that was my favourite as a kid – don’t know why really ๐
Have a good one…..
