How do they take in flight photos of aircraft?
Probably a stupid question but it puzzles me

I think many of the survivors were built too late for active service during the war. There are some ‘Warbirds’ flying that actually do have a combat history. Many of them are rebuilds using little of the original aircraft which causes some consternation to the purists as to whether they are genuine or replicas.

According to my one Jane’s book there are 34 of them still airworthy.
Which begs the question, how many actually saw wartime service and how many came along after WWII ?

They use allsorts of planes and helo’s for air to air snaps and some long and very short lenses too. I’ve seen shots taken by guys standing (strapped) on the open cargo deck of a C-130 Hercules.
Personally the only stuff I’ve done was TV work from an side door opened Bell Jetranger and from the somewhat cramped cockpit of an RAF Bulldog trainer.
Great fun all the same.

You can see the raised deck angle as the jets keep pace with the bomber. 🙂

Here are 2 pictures from the B-25 photo flight from the Continental website. The training center has a bunch of great photos from this flight but I’ve never been able to track down copies.

I read an ariticle about it in an issue of Airways years ago. Clay Lacy has a Learjet with special camera equipment for this purpose.
