How easy it is to talk about war

So many people including me have talked about war like it was a video game. Yet, the cruelty of death is so striking that it hits us at the very core of our humanity. Yesterday I killed a rat and I was almost in tears and couldn’t sleep. I took its life like it meant nothing. I suddenly feel extremely stupid and ashamed that I or any of us can discuss war and weapons so casually. How we can just decide to take the life of another being and not only so but of a fellow human.

on a related note..some would argue the advances in unmanned drones and weapons, takes the ugly out of war, and turns it more into a video game

Lets hope development goes that way,but i’m afraid the human eye and brain cannot be beaten ,YET.

Quotes From Conan The Barbarian:

Mongol General: We have won again. That is good! But what is best in life?

Mongol Warrior: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcon on your wrist, wind in your hair!

Mongol General: Wrong! Conan, what is best in life?

Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!

On a tangent, I love Californians – and thats saying something given that I am strongly anti-iraq and what the US government is doing today and being a Muslim. One of the things that surprised me most when I first came to the US was how the West Coast Californians where almost a completely different breed from the East coast ppl. Instead of Israel and oil the Californian banners read global warming and ecology. From the way they speak, think, live and love they are like a different culture from the east coasters. If they can elect Arnold as governor then I’d think Arnold is one heck of a governor. ( although I must admit I know little about his actual political program).

I can say that once you’ve seen the atrocities of war first hand, it marks you forever and to talk about it is virtually impossible as you couldn’t possibly put it into words for people to understand what you saw. However, for some, it can be easy to word their experiences as they are able to completely seperate themselves from reality. for them, the shock of war has become a outside reality which they might consider as a game.

Ollie has just posted another load of cr@p! If only 2%of people are prepared to pull the trigger how come so many died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme? You may need to google that. You could also google Stalingrad as well.

No-one knows how they will react unless they’ve been in that situation, I certainly don’t. But I think if someone was trying to kill me I might just find the self preservation gene coming to the fore.

I will second that. If i remember it right it is something like 98% of people could never pull the trigger to kill someone. 1% are complete psycos and i cant remember the 1%.

Ive been out shooting rabbits and i couldnt pull the trigger on them.

ollie is that last one percent you or me.Put in a position were you or your family are under threat even us hardened animal killers would kill a man without blinking, that probably goes for everyone reading this…
As for war ordinary people are put through extraordinary events, and do less than ordinary things.

The greatest irony of being on this forum, especially in the modern military aviation, most of us often argue which aircraft is better such and such, but in the end, all aircrafts do the same thing and that is causing damage to infastructure and human life. There is no glory in bombing or killing, but on here weapons are glorified.

Laviticus, I was reflecting more on myself than on anyone else.

Yes ,i discuss and enjoy watching” weapons of war”.Ive also collected and used firearms for some thirty of my thirty nine years and to date haven’t killed a single thing with them.My interest lies in the mechanics of a firearm not in its intended use, same goes for my air enthusiasm. Its a fact ,people die in wars, but the more people who understand the real events behind conflict the warts and all down right horrid side to it.The less people will back governments intentions to start unjust wars, just look at today’s climate.
