As using a keyboard has become more important than using a paper and pen nowadays, Im wondering what kind of typing speed people here have attained. And do you use hunt and peck or all fingers on home row? And do you have to look at the keyboard if you use hunt and peck. Ive seen hunt and peck typers hit 80wpm so Im not knocking that method. I personlly dont know how fast I type normally, but Ive been training with a typing program on my comp and I can do between 45 and 50wpm with 9% errors. I have a long way to go before Im proficient typist.

I have recently picked up on touch typing and can do a good 50 words per minute and much prefer using the computer to write something even if it’s only a few words. For me, it’s a far quicker alternative.

I generally can type pretty much at a considerable speed with a quite good success rate with the ‘hunt and peck’ method without looking at the keypad. I never really considered myself to be quick at typing until certain people were amazed at how good I actually could do it with one or two fingers. I guess it is just progress after using a computer so often.
I can also type with all my fingers, however, I hurt my wrists doing this and take a lot slower so I donβt use it that often.

Too fast for my damned keyboard
About thirty years ago, my employer actually paid me for four months to learn to type. I now run around 45-50 words per minute on a good day, and sometimes beat my keyboard.
Bet you never saw a four-footed typist with three toes on each foot before!;)

An all-time hunt&peck-typer here. I can type blindly (with an average of three to four fingers) as long as i’m sitting straight in front of my keyboard. Of course, i hardly ever sit straight in front of my keyboard, i usually lay in some half-assed position like a Roman emperor during dinner. Often enough with either my cat on my lap or somewhere on my desk – preferably asleep with it’s head on one of my typing hands.
For short pieces of text my output isn’t all that high, but when there’s more word to be typed my speed automatically moves up. Usually the cat’s thrown out by then as well. During my days at journalism school, i always found those who did know how to type properly highly discouraging. But then again, there’s no use in typing really fast when your not capable of composing a sentence or story at the same pace.
Funnily, enough, ever since my right index finger got it’s tip crushed in a forklift (yes it was bloody and gory and messy and painful, no i don’t look terribly mutilated because of it) my right-hand middle finger has taken over that role – even though the index finger is almost as good as new.

Mixtec,
I use the ‘hunt and peck’ method and have reached the astonishing speed of 100 words per minute with 100% accuracy. Providing of course that every word is ‘a’ π
