how fast have you personally been

Just how fast have you personally been on public roads, iether by car of bike or whatever ?

Assuming the fun police aren’t reading these threads (bless em all, more pay I say !) whats the highest speed you have ever driven at on public roads ?. I’m not including speed trials or such like in this.

Personally, I own upto 165MPH on my Fireblade a few years ago.

Yes it probably was irresponsible, but the road was empty of other traffic and I only ever did it the once just to see what the bike would do…there was still abit more but I chickened out !…and I havent done it since.

Cheers

RE: how fast have you personally been

Bad experience with Porsches my mate bought a 928 S2 ,he and I went parachuting for a day , intending to stay in a local hostelry , unfortunately rather than book a room I thought I would sleep in the car , I woke up later after feeling a loud thud then a bang , had a very quick look at the dials and both needles were bouncing off the stops and realised he had decided to drive home , wanted to see how fast the car would go and I had woken up when he lost control and hit the central reservation .Every thing went blurry and when all came to a halt I was squashed aginst the back seat by the engine and gearbox , got dragged out by the hair , with relatively minor injuries , in court the police argued that “as the skid/debris trail extended over a length of 300ft , the defendant was comfortably exceeding the speed limit” result -5yr ban + £5000 fine ( 5 separate charges).
Had another hairy moment when the first YZF750SP’s came out , never checked the chain in 5 months , trying to wheelie to impress the wife , chain snapped , cut a neat slot in the tyre and wheel , wrecked the crankcase and ripped the heel off my boot , and shat me down the road , no helmet on and my mate caught it on video , embarrassing !!!

RE: how fast have you personally been

Hooligans, the lot of you!

Foot to the floor and balls-out on the Autobahn is good fun, but gets pretty tedious after a while and you soon take the speed for granted. The most fun is to travel at around 100/120mph on forest tracks, or tarmac roads just wide enough to take a car, preferably at night! 😉

Before I got old and sensible (okay, boring then!) I used to do rather a lot of motor rallying and it is the ultimate rush in a wheeled vehicle! Flat out in 5th gear across closed MoD ranges in Wales stands out (about 135mph) as does seeing most of County Cork through the side window of an Escort RS2000 it had that much oversteer!

Alas, all of this seems an awful long time ago now, certainly a long time before the internet caught on, but finding this piece on-line came as a nice surprise a couple of weeks back:

RE: how fast have you personally been

I never thought i would have the misfortune to agree with FlyDesi ( 😉 ) but yes, I have to say that if you wanna put your foot down with RELATIVE impunity, drive through France.

My girlfriend & I landed at Dunkirk at 3.00AM, stopped just a for acouple of tea breaks on the way, crossed the border through the Alps (and those “hundreds” of tunnels) and were in Milan for lunch. You can work out the avrage speed for yourself (I do not want to set a bad example by stating the exact speed; suffice to say, did test the top-speed limit of my new company car, beamer 325).

BTW when we get back to UK we learned that in France the Police issue on-the-spot fines of GBP400.00 for speeding: we were lucky. So please don’t try it, unless you have GBP400 to burn !! (and yes, speeding is dangerous and a silly way of proving whatever …..).

RE: how fast have you personally been

Good point Frank, I was flat out on a borrowed Ducati 996 Monoposto and saw brake lights in the distance , it was’nt till I got closer I realised it was two lorries side by side , option 1 – gun it down the hard shoulder , but thats just asking for a puncture , option 2 -between the lorries ,too close together, so the only option was ride up the drivers side of the right hand lorry. It was tanking it down with rain so braking was’nt an option , I was so ##### scared I did’nt even look at the speedo , I pulled in at the next services just to try and stop shaking
If anybody fancies doing their motorcycling licence – don’t – crack cocaine is cheaper and less harmful.

TThe sad is, you don’t even notice that it is fast… except when you drive along a motorway, and see the poor cars driving at “only” 100, 120, 130, 150, 170 km/h !!!

Around 190 km/h while driving a car… It could drive faster, but I didn’t want to try it…

Else, 300kmh+ in a Thalys Bullet Train. Does that count?

RE: how fast have you personally been

Ahhh, the memories of youth…

I can’t match the speeds you blokes speak of, but the circumstances were pretty memorable anyway. (and I think the statute of limitations on traffic offences would be pretty good after 25 years, but I digress…

In 1978, I owned a Holden (Australian GM product), fitted with a Chevrolet 327 engine and four speed manual.

One night, about 3 am, when all the Highway Patrol boys had gone to bed, I was driving home somewhat rapidly from southern Sydney to my home on the northern beaches. I was travelling towards the point where Kingsford Smith airport crosses the roadway, forming a tunnel about 200 metres long. A hotted up Ford Falcon utility came alongside and it was on. Both of us floored it through the tunnel. I only reached about 120 mph on the speedo, probably about 115 actual, and was absolutely flat out. So was the Falcon. The echo from our exhaust systems in that tunnel was music to the ears of a petrol head.

Like I said, the memories of youth. Seems bloody stupid today, seeing as it was in the middle of a city, not in the country somewhere.

RE: how fast have you personally been

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-01-03 AT 09:18 PM (GMT)]280 kph in a Ferrari 355 F1 GTS on the M8 between the Shotts and Newhouse turnoffs , 270 kph on a Yamaha OWO1 on the same stretch of road and ALMOST 200MPH on a Hayabusa – slowed down to go into Harthill services and realised I still had a gear left so I have NO doubt that the Hayabusa will hit 200MPH , especially as that stretch of road is a long downwards hill. None of the above vehicles belong to me , the Ferrari belongs to a famous Scottish racing driver , the OWO1 and Hayabusa belong to a friend , I have a lowly YZF750SP , good fun but getting elderly now.
Highly irresponsible , I know but on all occasions it was 02:00 , dry roads and well serviced vehicles , and if anybody is interested there is never any police on that stretch of road as the North Lanarkshire/West Lothian boundary divides that section of motorway

RE: how fast have you personally been

I can confirm the high speed potential of the Mini City for you Snapper. A mate of mine lived and breathed the things and had a Stage 3 racing head put on his, slightly-aged, Mini City and on a long AND steep downhill run we once got the needle nearly to the “E” mark of the fuel guage. At that point the wing mirror parted company with the rest of the vehicle and fell out of formation to the rear very quickly.

We kind of lost our bottle a bit after that, and my mate later crashed the Mini into a Toyota Celica containing 4 very large gentlemen of West Indian extraction in the Salford area of Manchester some months later, so we never got chance to repeat the stunt with a pace car more’s the pity. Like you said though, it would have been nice to know just how fast we did get up to on that hill!

RE: how fast have you personally been

I took my old Miny City E (998cc) round to the ‘I’ of Ignition on the M25. I estimate 115mph+ – that cart officially did 86mph, but there were special circumstances.

I had alloys, with 155x70x12’s, was in the slipstream of 1 car, had another behind, and couldn’t pull in. It was a long downhill section (not steep, but LOOOONG). I kinda wish I had got a ticket, as I would dearly love to know the real speed.
