How Many Of You Would Like To See A Shackleton Fly Again

Mods, I know there is a thread to do with WR963 already, but this is separate query.

I would like to know how many people would A) Like to see a shackleton fly again (in this country) and consequently B) Donate/support efforts to see one fly again?

Im not asking for naysayers please, I have a copy of the CAA feasibility report done with regards to returning 963′ to the air. the estimate for the work done on WR963 would cost somewhere in the region of £4-5million so not a small amount of money, but a significant amount of money.

So, once more, how many of you would like to see a shackleton in the air again and how many would help/donate towards this goal?

Cheers

Ben

Yokes

Here’s two for comparison. The Lancaster with a background and a Mark One Shack. There is some similarity, which changes with a more rectangular MarkII and MarkIII.

indeed it was a Chipmunk

I remeber seeing it at at Lossie, was told that they were used for tailwheel type familiarization and handling – and not for jollies or anything like that!

Control column appears similiar but the wheel itself is completely different

Is that control column in thread 97, the same type as used in the Lancaster?

i have worked on all types including Growlers and in fact I worked at Woodford so have a passing aquaintence with both the Shackelton and the Vulcan.
I have actualy been down to Coventry more than a few times (having also worked for AA).The principle is great and I would support it and in fact we even looked at the feasibility of moving her to Elvington with lots of runway etc.and the Museums verbal blessing we could undertake the work on her there.I am all for it BUT as I have said in a previous thread there is the big issue of key spares. She has tons of airframe spares BUT a shortage of Key hydraulic and major electrical spares in fact she has a big shortage of generators. Wing spar billets aint a problem £72 K for the set last time of asking but a lot invoved as they have to be drilled aircraft specific and therefore a lot of implications if someone screws it up.
When we looked into the issue of the key spares I was told well there is an airframe here and two in Cyprus and one in the USA. Great but if the key parts are knackered on those airframes and you run out of spares at an airshow away from base then what ?.
Funding is not realy an issue as I know there are an awful lot of growler fans out there as I own the domain Avro Shackleton .co.uk that should give you a clue. But Spares issues must be nailed down firmly before any further responsible action can go ahead.
At the end of the day its supporters and sponsors money and you need to look to giving them value for money with a reasonably long display life. From memory I think its around 3,500 hours from major to extensions on proviso before next spar boom mod/relife.

All for it and go for it guys if you can nail the key spares issue’s. We will give what support and engineering effort we can and possibly also some input from one of our sponsors.

Regards Keep up the good work

Is that the same Mike Eastman involved with Skeeter BDNS, Auster Agricola and Provost XF914?

Wow!

Some excellent points there Mike. Nothing serious would be undertaken without a damn good look into what we need and what we have, ive been going through things for a month or so and only now is it really beginning to dawn on me what a monumental undertaking it will take to get 963 back where she belongs!

To some, it would be daunting and frightening, I find it different in that it pushes me into wanting to make it happen even more.

Any help you could provide would be most welcome!

All the best

Ben

Hi Shackleton people ! Have found photos within Colin Louries collection of Shacks with a ‘J ‘ on the nose…

I’m sorry Keith but I’ve just laughed out loud (as they say!) at that.
A great friend of mine was a plane spotter big time, but there were occasions when he could’nt get to Mawgan to watch the aircraft, so he entrusted it to a friend.
The friend would write down the serials and codes and send them to Barry, the odd thing was all the Shackletons were coded ‘J’, questions were asked, especially when it gradually emerged that aircraft were coded J irrespective of the serial number they wore, after a few months it gradually dawned on Barry that his friend was actually reading the 8 sqn Arabian Dagger motif of the nose!:D

Cracking pics there.

I would say ’95 is more MR than AEW, full length bomb doors, 20mm nose canon, and ASV radome kind of swings it, I guess because they are post service mods it retains AEW designation.

As a Coastal Commandphile I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the AEW scheme has grown on me, all over extra dark sea grey looks good and hides the dirt, and those 8 Sqn three colour bars each side of the roundal, dagger motif on the nose, and the large red ‘8’ on the sides are eye catching.
The APS radome can be refitted without the radar of course. I seem to remember that the ASV void is an empty one bar an aerial fit in the flat of the the radome fairing, I used to be slim enough to drop down through the floor rear hatches and crawl into the bombay through the rear inspection hatches – those days are numbered!

Dr SG – thanks for that too, id imagine the internal fitout from the AEW.2 and the MR.2 is totally different?

WL795 at St Mawgan is an MR2.

Well, sort of, officially 795 is still an AEW2, as mentioned before, 795 has the full length MR2 bomb doors retro fitted & some maritime bits & bobs retro fitted to return it’s appearance to a previous period as an MR2.
