How much of Flypast do you actually read?

I ask the question as I have found a problem with some two articles in FP. In the February 2016 issue there are some interesting Vickers Valiant articles. In one,on page 77, left hand column, there is reference to WZ396 displaying at RAF Wyton on May 23rd, 1964 when an undercarriage door issue caused the a/c to be diverted to Manston for a belly landing on a foam strip, without little damage. The same page also refers the reader to page 86,which shows 3 photos of the same a/c making the belly landing. On the left hand side of the page, it states the a/c was displaying at Bentwaters on May 23rd, 1964 and the belly landing led to the a/c being written off. Does anyone know which article is correct?
I have sent this question to FP twice now without receiving a reply.

My question has been answered but there is still the question why FP does not appear to proofread articles before publication.

Lack of sub editors to proofread, lack of time, lack of personal knowledge, belief in the knowledge of the writer/contributor, possibly coupled with a different person checking in each of the stories, being tired, being distracted, being interrupted, etc.

That said, it would be easier if every writer checked their facts (it is generally what they are paid for) prior to submitting the story but many of them will claim they don’t get paid enough to maintain a library with which to consult, let alone their time – if they are paid, of course.

But not replying to a query smacks of don’t-give-a-damn ignorance or couldn’t-care-less high-handedness. Or an office where there is so much being piled onto too few for anything out of the ordinary, that has nothing to do with getting the publication to the printers, to be worried about.

Some of the confusion may arise from the aircraft being from 543 squadron which was based at RAF Wyton

Many thanks for the information. My question has been answered but there is still the question why FP does not appear to proofread articles before publication. This seems to be an issue that goes right back to the early days. When they advertised for an editor a few years back, they asked what you would do to improve the magazine if selected. In my application, I said that I would ensure that everything was proof read. I did not get the job. I find it very sad that FP and other publications fail to see how important proof reading is today.

Should all be part of the Editor’s job as you say. In many good magazines you used to get a nice comment, suffixed ‘- Ed’, which would often add a personal recollection or emphasise a statement. I think you are probably wasting your time expecting an answer or any improvement from FP. But fortunately there are a number of other good titles on the newsstand!

The belly landing led to the aircraft being written off and retained at the fire school at Manston

According to ASN it was Bentwaters where it displayed http://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=94909

This is confirmed by the following https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=LyBQBwAAQBAJ&pg=PA186&lpg=PA186&dq=valiant+wz396&source=bl&ots=5S0C35F1JD&sig=6DaSRabsvPJVcjk5CDJkio8Oajg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjuvoamg53LAhVHuxQKHbKdA6kQ6AEIRzAH#v=onepage&q=valiant%20wz396&f=false

I stick to “Aeroplane” now. Excellent cold war edition I am really enjoying.
Hope Key keeps up the good work and don’t ruin it !
