dark light

How sneaky can they get?.

Treated myself to fishcakes and chips tonight, as I hadn’t had them for ages.
“Do you want salt and vinegar love” I was asked, I replied in the affirmative, and the lass shook, and shook the salt container, as if the holes were blocked, I said I didn’t want what appeared to be an overdose of salt, to which I was told… GET THIS…Elf and Safety told them they had to get rid of the “Old” salt container, which had 16 holes in it, and to replace it with one which had only 5 holes in it. Failure to comply would result in the Chippy being marked down in the report.
Makes one wonder what we, as the general public, don’t know what various government departments get up to that we never find out about.
1984 springs to mind.

Always makes me cringe, when visiting a hospital you invariably see a patient who’s sneaked out for a tab whilst connected to a mobile oxygen clyinder….

The unofficial motto of emphysema should be ‘you’ve got to make do with what you’ve got’….

Smoking can lead to emphysema which, although it cannot be cured, will lead to a patient requiring years of increasingly intensive treatment to mitigate the side effects. Smoking does not lead to violent crime, but we all still pay for those oxygen tanks!

But you wouldn’t have, Linc, if you think about it. Smoking, notwithstanding passive smoking only injures the user whereas alcohol has the potential to injure the user and third parties directly as a consequence of its overuse.

Perchance I could have worded it better Chas, inasmuch as I was trying to collate the cost to the NHS between smoking related illness, and Alcohol. Yes, smoking may well kill you, then that’s one less for the NHS to cope with, whereas drinking can cause forever ongoing problems to the drinker, which I would imagine would cost the NHS far more, in the long run?.

56 died in the Bradford City stadium fire, which was traced back to a discarded cigarette butt.

Just saying…

snaf. I know that smoking is bad for you, but in nearly 30yrs as a Copper, I attended probably thousands of incidents caused by alcohol, but never ONE caused by smoking. I agree with what you have said, it wold be interesting to find out, what you have outlined.

It would be interesting to compare the healthcare costs of alcohol related issues across a few countries. Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Sweden spring to mind.

Following on from this principle, can we now expect regulations requiring beer to be only served from sealed containers with one thin drinking straw to limit alcohol consumption? After all, alcohol costs the NHS billions, and is said to be bad for us.

Trolled on Fladen Maxximus Predator lures and Fladen Maxximus 7-25g Nano rods; had an hour to kill. Both about 5lb or so – the average stamp of bass I’ve been getting this year.

I checked the salt shaker at my local chippie, and it had more than 5 holes, though many of them appeared blocked. I’m a sucker for salt on my fish and chips, so I have a tall white table salt ‘shaker’ at home. This thing dispenses salt out of a chute in the lid, so you don’t want to shake it! I tend to dispense a small quantity of salt into the palm of one hand and sprinkle it over food with the other. Fight the system!

Should make the portion of chips smaller. Carbs soaked in saturated fat. Almost as bad as the batter. And ban the free issue of crispy bits / scraps. They’re the best bit, sprinkled all over.

Keep your bad habits boys, I’ve been running (ouch, that was dumb at my age) cycling, swimming, kayaking and just started karate after stopping smoking and I’ll see all of you dead and buried waaaaay before I succumb to any of that. I’m in better shape than when I was twenty.

P what the hell are you doing letting someone else put your salt and vinegar on anyway? I never, ever have or will – drown the *******s, shake until your arm hurts, drench them a second time and give a light dusting before adding a tad more. If your car don’t stink on a Monday from the Friday you’ve not had enough seasoning.

My local chippy still use the same salt shakers they have had for years, you’ve been had.

There was a directive to that effect which appeared about 5 years ago. I don’t think most places took a lot of notice of it and the ones that did bought salt dispensers with five hole which gave the same amount of salt as a sixteen holer.
Charliehunt: I agree about the contradictory advice we keep being given. Sometimes it’s not even weeks or months before a contradiction is thrown at us, it’s only a couple of days. The main thing is that a lot of this rubbish flies in the face of the way our parents and grand parents lived. Given the current obesity crisis I think we’d be better returning to their dietary practices.
