How to change an unrealistic aircraft's behaviour?

Hi,

With a lot of the aircraft I have, they seem to have a mind of their own and don’t handle as I would like them to. By this, I mean that they may, for example, take only 7 or 8 seconds to pick up enough speed on the runway before they can take off. Also, once airborne, these aircraft seem to be going ridiculously overspeed.

Is there a way of changing a file or two and making these aircraft seem slightly more realistic?

Well, the best thing I advise is to have a crack at making your own Flight Model if you have one thats no good!

http://www.mudpond.us/

All the tools you need should be here (you’ll need MS excel for the Flight Dynamics Workbook) but it’s not as hard as you might think! 😉 There is also a beta version of the excellent ‘Air Wrench’ which uses all the formulas & Coefficients that the FDWB uses but is far simpler to use and will make brand new FM’s based on the existing air & cfg files.

You’ll really get the best out of the FS Sim Engine with these. 😀

Just make sure you have the required data for your chosen machine (weights, power, dimensions, control surface areas and movement etc) and you should have a half decent FM! 🙂

Cheers

Yeah I know what you mean. I have just dowloaded a Grob 115E and it is the most sluggish plane I have ever flew on flight sim, having flown in one of these before I can assure you this is not a sluggish aircraft however the one I downloaded is.

😡

For me, it tends to be the opposite. I’ve come across aircraft that are at V1 about 5 seconds after you apply full throttle.

I don’t get it how the trim/pitch roller in all the light aircraft is off-set all my light a/c just fall out of the air if i centre my joystick.

To add to adwebber’s reply, fiddling around with the aircraft.cfg (and *.air) files is something to be done carefully.

Most parameters can be tweaked in the aircraft.cfg file, but there are still some details in the *.air file that affect the performance.

Depending on what specific model you’re looking at, there are some very good flight dynamics tweakers that can help you. Check the main design forums at flightsim.com, simviation.com, avsim.com and (blatant plug) the flight dynamics forum at http://www.freeflightdesign.com (aka FFDS).

http://www.avhistory.org is the place for the “1%” flight dynamics discussions and tools.

This is all done in the aircrafts config file. Can be quite tricky to do , best think to do is go on the main fs forums like at avsim and see if anyone one has a config file already done.
