Recently the Brazilian Navy took charge of an ex-commercial transport ship the “Atlantico Sul”. I wonder what would be the most creative and effective military way to use this ship?

Could it be converted into a “poor man’s LHD”?
Ideas anyone?

Steve, that ship reminds me of the Maeresk S ship proposal

Something like this Maritime Prepositioning ship proposal? http://peoships.crane.navy.mil/pms325/futureships/MPF(F)/MPF.htm

If you want a really novel idea for this ship, we’ve been talking about tankers on my board the Idea in which Robert has come up with is really interesting…Scattered Intelligence Agency.
Battle Tankers π
In Eric L. Harry’s novel ‘Invasion’ the Chinese invade the USA with aircraft carriers and transport ships based on Ultra Large Crude (or Container) Carriers. Each one carried hundreds of aircraft and thousands of troops and their equipment.

In my humble naval ignorance I thought that the bow area could be converted in a Large Hangar for Super Puma sized helos…and a large helipad could be set up there. The mid sections could be converted to personel (marine units) transport while maintaining the container capability abovedeck… Would it make any sense to have large folding floating barges hinged against the sides of the ship in order to simplify loading and unloading while at sea? Away from ports?…

How much more vulnerable is a civilian converted ship when compared to a dedicated military ship buit from scratch for this purpose? Would you care to dwelve on this issue for a while? What exactly is an AOE? MHCs? T-AKE? π In plain English please for the naval-impaired amongst us, please π (ME!)

What you suggestested with the front deck and Puma’s etc is the Arapaho concept.The barges you refer to are called MexeFloats. As for vulnerability, see Falklands war hit of Argentinian Excoet missile on UK’s Atlantic Conveyor (burned out and sank).
MSC/MHC = Minesweeper, Coastal
AD = Destroyer Tenders
AE = Ammunition Ships
AF = Stores Ships
AFS = Combat Stores Ships
AGF = Command Ships
AH = Hospital Ships
AK = Cargo Ships
AKR = Vehicle Cargo Ships
AO = Fleet oilers
AOE = Fast Combat Support Ship
AOR = Fleet Replenishment Oilers
AR = Repair Ships
ARC = Cable Repair Ships
ARS = Rescue & Salvage Ships
AS = Submarine Tenders
ATF = Fleet Ocean Tugs
These are USN designaitons. In all cases the A stands for Auxiliary. Various other letters depend on function of ship. A “T-” in front of a designation indicates that the respective ship is operated by the Military Sealift Command (MSC) and that it is manned by a civilian crew (As opposed to US Navy and military crew).
Full listing here and more detailed descriptions of some types here here.

Just to clarify this issue, the Atlantico Sul is still not operational due to some legal technicalities and lack of funds, it doesn’t have even a crew assigned to it yet…

I’d spend the entire defence budget on converting it into a Arsenal Ship with a 1000 cell VLS π
Heyt, that’s a great idea!!!

Forget the D and the H in LHD for this baby.
Translation from portugese to englkish suggests that in 2001: “the ship was brought alongside in the Armory of Navy of Rio De Janeiro, where the inspection was submitted technique for naval engineers and technician, being later docado in the Levee Admiral RΓ©gis, similar of being converted into Ship of Logistic Support.”
So, she’ll be a logistic support ship.
It is a containership so they could equip here “Arapaho”-style or like Atlantic Conveyor and have her support transport helicopters. This would require getting rid of at least one of the two large on-board cranes. So probably she will be serving as T-AK (sea lift of cargo & vehicles, munitions and supplies). Maybe munitions and other supply tasks for long duration deployment of carrier group.

Actually I think they are using this as a logistics transport ship. Send in the troops to establish a beach head expand the area then send in the supplys. This is most definatly a back line ship. Similar to the former RNZN Charles Uppham in role.
