HP Halifax items.

One of our old CARG members has recently unearthed a couple of spare Halifax items in the dark and murky depths of his garage…
The first item is a complete control Column and Yoke. The second is a throttle box.

Our Late chairman, Tony Southern acquired these items as spares during the early eighties for the proposed ex-10 Sqn Halifax B MK.2, srs 1 (R9371, ZA-Z) part-cockpit project, on the off-chance that the original bits would be too knackered to restore.
It is thought that they originally came from the High Ercall scrappings.

It is now entirely possible that, seeing as how the project has been long-since disposed of; these spares will be released in due course to become available to anyone who is interested.

Indeed, and an almost complete windscreenframe would help a lot too.

I know 57 Rescue are looking for a Halifax control column – they would be able to provide a very good home for it. This is the only ongoing Halifax project at the moment and is a very noble endevour.

Unfortunately, the RAF Museum Reserve Collection, Stafford seem to have their own ideas.
The remains of R9371 are still sitting on the same transit pallet which they collected from the CARG premises at Innsworth almost eight years ago, together with a crate which contained an almost complete cockpit windscreen frame and the armoured glass bulkhead behind the pilot’s head; together with a lot more component parts that Tony Southern collected for the proposed restoration.
That’s why the remaining CARG members would rather have the two items mentioned be made available to someone who would actually make good use of them.

Have to agree with that. Although I have found the RAF Museum staff to be helpful and encouraging in the past, I made them a very good offer for something in very long term storage at Stafford that in all instances is only of any use / interest to me, and has absolutely no connection with them. The offer was politely but firmly declined, adding that the RAF Museum do not sell items to individuals from its reserve collection (even to established projects of over twenty years existence) and any trades will always go first to accredited museums!

Hope the Halifax items do go to a worthwhile cause, and will be seen to a wider public in the future.

Nice item, what I do find strange though, is what’s the use for a national museum such as the RAFM to have items such as these in storage while a complete airframe is on show. Could this not be used in a reconstruction, or put on display as an exhibit in itself?

With regard to the above Stafford photograph of the R9371 section…
The seat was fully restored by yours truly; and a start was made on the original fitted control column restoration… (hence the restored and painted lower section)… before the project was put on ice due to the arrival at Innsworth of Newark’s ST-12 Monospar VH-UTH. The extent of the restoration work that was required for this airframe, in conjunction with the ongoing restoration and rebuild of the Boulton Paul C Mk.II turret for RAFM’s Hudson at Hendon meant that poor old R9371 was halted in her tracks and languished in a corner of the workshop until finally donated to RAFM upon the demise of the Group in 2007.
The recently unearthed items mentioned in the initial post are, as stated, spares acquired by Tony to be used if the need arose, and the original column was found to be too moth-eated to be rectified.

Looking at the paint finishes on R9371 at Stafford Store I wonder if the fitted column is the original or the sourced spare.
