HP Hermes G-ALDC at Southend

I know the incident involving this aircraft has been mentioned before but i cannot find the relevant thread, so i’m not sure if this has been posted before. Anyway i’ve just found this pic of her positioned precariously on the railway line soon after it happened.

This bit made me laugh;

“Brings back memorys!!!!

I once lived in the cottage with the red light on at the end of the runway on the bend, 22 years ago a plane hit the hump at the end of the runway,skipped over the fence, i remember watching TV and hearing a noise outside and then opening the curtains to see a plane sitting there, there were Police, dozens of Ambulances and Fire engines BUT! guess who got there first?…………..
……CUSTOMS!!!!”

Nothing changes!

I personally prefered the Channel Airways Viscount incident at the same place in about 1968…

There was once talk of tunneling the railway where it passes the airport, but costs and the fact Rochford station would be underground put paid to the plan.

Strange this should eb posted today in light of todays incident, luckly like to day they walked away.

Thanks James. A lucky escape indeed for everyone concerned. Survive an air crash, then if not hit by a train comes near electricution.

Interesting shot Rob, wouldn’t have like to have been seated aft!

There is a bit more about the accident, inc picture taken from the other side in this thread, http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=52911
The ASN page, http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19601009-0

As an aside, some lengths of track that run close through runway undershoots had a safety cut out system that would cut the power to the tracks if an aircraft had cut the warning cable and thus reduce the chance of a train being able to carry on through the area.
