HP42

The sceptics amongst us (OK OK that includes me..) cannot imagine for one minute that a flyable HP42 will ever grace our skies.

I am aware of the group who hope to make this happen but, come on guys, this aint gonna happen is it. Or is it?

Does anybody have the inside track on it?

The last I heard was that the engines were actually going to be original Jupiters too (wtf would they find 4 of those plus spares?) whereas earlier information was either Russian or Leonides.

All sounds too ambitious to me and, lets face it. hugely expensive.

I know the Vimy was done but, well this a massively more ambitious undertaking.

Come on, lets smell the coffee – give us the inside gen.

Anybody able to post a piccie? THhis was a rocking great thing.

HP (without a 42…)

He was last seen crossing the Alpes with an elephant! 😀

With Murdoch, Face and BA Baracus wasn’t it?

HP42 miscellany

As Jupiters were licence built in France, Russia and italy (and probably elsewhere) it is possible that they have sourced some powerplants from overseas rather than the UK

given the scale of the project – might be easier to go and search for Hannibal 😉

Incidentally the RAF S/L who led the search was the father of a friend of mine – although I spent an interesting afternoon talking Ninacks & Wapatis on the North West frontier we never got a chance to talk about the search in any detail- a lost opportunity I fear

It’s not going to be certified to carry passengers from what I have heard. She would earn her keep purely as a large flying attraction. Remove the need
to carry passengers and the cost of doing it is reduced considerably.
As for new Jupiters – well they were built in the 1930’s and indeed were supported by Bristols for about twenty years. The possibility of building new examples isn’t that far fetched if you realise that technology has greatly eased the workload from machinists to CAD/CAM . It’s not impossible – it just requires a little imagination.
There has been serious discussion with a U.K company regarding the build and it would be built in the U.K.

The implication from the website is that they definitely have AT LEAST four Jupiters as well as the money. It all seems very secretive, but to give them their due they did get the Vimy replica up and running (although with Chevrolet engines!).

Peter McMillin got the Vimy going. John La Nou made a lot of it and AJD helped. What did the HP 42 people do?

I am very sceptical too.

Make a good formation with the Concorde.

I’d love to see it but I am not going to hold my breath.

I can still remember the HP0/400 project.

Still sceptical…..

‘We have the £10m and the engines.’

Whilst I can only dream of what ten million quid looks like I do know what a Jupiter looks like.

There ain’t any…..

A new build old engine carries with it all sorts of issues.

To carry fare-paying passengers a new-build 42 will need JATO-assist as well as 4 Jupiters to lift the paperwork….

As far as ten million quid is concerned, my guess is that this is an optomistic guess of the sponsorship value rather than cash in the bank.

I tell you what – show me the bank account with ten million quid in it and you are attracting my interest. I have been known to act impulsively when it comes to flying machines that blow my frock up…

I can just see me and my staff on a junket to France at 500ft in a 42.

But then I wake up every time.

Looking at some of the pictures on that website, I’d be great if they put her in RAF colours – green/brown camo with yellow undersides, though one assumes the aim is to have her in Imperial Airways livery.

So it must be a different team to those who built the Vimy…. Seems an interesting idea, but dare I ask why????? Seems a massive undertaking for little return. Best of luck to them however.

Where is this beast being built? UK, US, or elsewhere?

The website says in Britain. It also implies that work has already started on construction, and that they have the necessary Jupiter engines. Someone on here must know more…

Would love to see this fly more than any other current project. Prewar airliners are almost extinct apart from a few Rapides and Dragons.
One question is I assume the CAA won’t issue a CofA due to lack of type support? So I guess it would have to operate on a permit to fly as it would require a transport CofA? Clearly operating pleasure flights will be the main form of income? Will the CAA allow a permit aircraft to operate commercially?

I say jolly good luck to them, it sounds like they really know what they’re doing and hopefully will achieve their goal.

It would be fantastic to see such an odd bird back in the skies. I love the whole idea of recreating the feel of the old Imperial Airways days.

I’m sure if it gets airborne it will be in demand for both airshows and filmwork – I can just see Bertie Wooster boarding it in a remake, or perhaps it could be in the next Indiana Jones adventure…

Let’s see how it turns out. I’d love a ride in such a machine! The interior looks sumptious. I’d have to dress up in period costume!

Some interesting facts on that site, eg:

“In 1935 Heracles was airborne on 361 of the 365 days”

I think that’s an amazing achievement.

Well, even if it doesn’t fly, a nice static HP42 would be a great achievement anyway. Three hurrah’s for them, hip hip …………….. 🙂

Cheers

I have replied regarding the HP42 before. The website only gives part of what they have already done. I joined the club (Club Imperial) earlier this year, and there has been more project information through that, as well as historical details on the HP42 and other Imperial Airways aircraft, routes, staff, etc, etc. If you have any doubts I would definately advise joining the club for more regular info and pics. They also seem to have been in the news in a certain other aviation magazine quite alot in the last few months.

Whats more I saw their (very impressive) stand at a few events this year. They must have done their homework as time after time throughout the year I could not come up with a question that they had not already thought of and sorted out! They have the funds (£10 million I think) and original engines are to be used. They are going to make it as close to the original as possible, partly due to finding loads of original drawings.

I know the Vimy was (in comparison!) a much easier and cheaper task than the HP42, but I remember at the time people said that the Vimy couldn’t be done either – so I wouldn’t under estimate them!! 😀 😀
