I was talking to my uncle the other day & he was reminding me of a couple of crashes witnessed by late Father when he was a nipper Living in Annesley, Nottinghamshire, which is about 4 miles from Hucknall. Sorry if information is vague but can anyone help with details.
The first aircraft was believed to be a German bomber which came down in woods near Annesley, the second was a Barracuda (my Dads identification) which crashed on rail lines again near Annesley. I assume that if the second aircraft was a Barracuda, it may have been flying from Hucknall.
Unfortunatley I cannot give specific years, but the second crash was late war.

IIRC there were copies of David Needham’s book in the NAM Shop on Sunday.
There were also copies of the new Lady Helen Nall book about the Hoveringham Lancaster crashes that had memorials dedicated at the weekend.

The story of Stirling EH988 is told in David Needham’s Nottinghamshire Air Crashes. Watersons in Nottingham probably still have some copies. No mention of the Barracuda, the only other crash coverd is the Goacher M Rans that came down at Moseley Farm in 1999.

Thank you for the replies, I hadn’t heard about the Stirling but I remember my Dad telling me about the Barracuda & the fact it came down on the railway track which runs through an area of Annesley called “the Warren”.
Don those details certainly fit the bill, many thanks for that.
Regards Rad.
P.s. Twinn otter e-mail address duly PM’d.

Hi Radpoe,
From my database:
25/11/1944
Fairey Barracuda I
Serial No.MX709
7 FPP
Flew into ground in bad weather near Annesley North Junction. T/O John Platt Murphy killed.
As has been previously mentioned, the other aircraft is likely to have been Stirling EH988.
Regards,
Don

Radpoe,
If you PM me an email address I’ll send you an article text about a Wireless Operator from Worksop who declined to fly in the Stirling EH988 that is commemorated at Anneseley.
EH988 was ex-1661 HCU and was being flown from RAF Winthorpe to Northern Ireland for scrapping. Recovered fragments from EH988, which crashed on the Musters Estate are stored in a small wooden casket at Newark Air Museum.
