Does anyone have any up to date info about the ‘new’ huey which was hopefully going to be on the circuit this year??
The website huey.co.uk doesnt seem to have been updated for a while.
I ask as for the last hour or so Ive been hearing what sounds very much like a huey in the distance (north of Loughborough) flying around – but I cant see anything!!

SNAP!
Meanwhile dahn under, this Bell Iroquois was demonstrated at the RAAF Museum’s Pageant on April 9th. It’s in use by the Australian Army (never throw anything away) was ex-Air Force, so it was welcome at the RAAF base, is a Vietnam vet, and the crew flew it down from Oakey in Queensland – a looong way.
Are there any in use as air display aircraft in the USA?
Talking of Aussie Vietnam vets, the exploits of my Uncle ,John Scott( door gunner RAAF Huey Gunship) are documented in this great book
(sorry the pictures rubbish) its a top read!
cheers

Has to be said they have a sound all their own. A nice sound though, somehow it seems less intrusive than the Chinook.

Love that sinister thumping. No wonder the Viet Cong called the Huey the Muttering Death.

Looked and sounded pretty good last night, was driving home and there she was thumping her way East following the M55, nasty looking rainstorm behind you though!

Huey in the Lancashire sky this weekend:19/20/21/22
Hello All,
Just to say that Huey 509 will be thumping around the sky near Blackpool this weekend (in the evenings) weather permitting!
The owner and i will be carrying out flying training in the Fylde area . We are working up for a type rating flying test to be taken on Monday afternoon.
I did mine last week at Redhill so its Phil Connolly’s time to sweat ‘hydraulics off’.
Just thought id let you know.

Looking good. Can’t wait to see and hear one flying again. I got very used to that sound when I was stationed in Germany and I miss it.

Huey is back in the sky and living near Preston
Hello Huey fans,
Just to re-kindle this thread with an update … ‘Huey 509’ also known from now on as ‘Miss Jo’… (named after Phil’s wife) …is back in the air after a LONG while on the ground at Redhill, undergoing transfer from a US ‘N’ reg to a UK ‘G’ reg …. she is now registered as G-UHIH and is now on the UK CAA aircraft type register …(as from YESTERDAY 11th) … i know as i was at Gatwick with PLD with all the paperwork!
Phil Connolly and i flew her back yesterday (11th) in the late afternoon/early evening (daylight) from Redhill, over Farnborough, Brize, to Wolverhampton for refuel…. (BIG THANK YOU to Wolverhampton for their ON SIDE/ CAN DO attitude … First Class place and we WILL be back)…
Then onwards over Tern Hill up through the Manchester corridor and into Phil’s place at Wesham, near Kirkham where she will now live!
We have been flying at Redhill over the last 4 days doing our flying training and type rating exams with Capt. Geff Connolly (no relation) of AV8 and Capt Fred Cross CAA head of Flt Exam.. so you MAY have heard us ‘thumping’ around that area …. everyone else did apparently !!!
We ARE going to be attending some UK Airshow events this year but initially as a static… now resplendent in FULL 128th Air Assault Company livery … i will be applying for a Display Authorisation VERY soon so we can ‘thump around’ at Airshows which is what we want to do.
So, thats it for now folks … some good jpgs sent to me today so i hope they will get posted on this thread …failing that, look at www.huey.co.uk for updates comming soon…. Cheers all, Fly Safe,
Neil

Many years ago (early 90’s) there was a flight of 31 Huey’s headed South across Los Angeles, the guy leading the flight decided to fly over the VA Hospital on Sepulveda Blvd. Looked ptretty damn impressive from where I was at the time & the sound was something else.
It was later reported that it took 3 days to get everyone in the VA pysch wards back under control…. oops..

I remember seeing a Huey flying along the south coast a couple of years ago, apparently the German Army still operate a few and bring them over here on occasional exercises. Perhaps it was one of those near Loughborough?
As an aside,I saw a German CH53 “Jolly Green” near Luton just a few days ago.

The noise of the Huey, frequently referred to as the soundtrack of the Vietnam war.

They don`t , as the `Huey` has a 2-bladed main rotor and the 412 has a 4-bladed.

Since the RAF/DHFS use Bell 412s under the name Griffin HT1 (and also as the HAR2 in Cyprus) there is a good chance of seeing a Huey-like helicopter around. Whether they sound the same is another matter…
