I have a friend who owns a WW2 Jeep. And that started me thinking… Is the Hum-vee more superior to the Jeep in terms of performance. I’ve read some impressive stuff about the Jeep… like it can handle 70 degree inclines. Can the Humvee do this too?

RE: Hum-vee Vs Jeep
The hum-vee was designed also to replace smaller trucks, at least in the US military. As to Toyota being better, please don’t over exaggerate. It’s hard to define better in a broad sense, but a toyota is no where being as rugged and steep grade performance as the hum-vee and the jeep. yes, it is amazingly small. Was surprised too the first time i saw it. As to the hum-vee, sometimes those too obvious nuts and bolts on the body don’t appeal to many.

RE: Hum-vee Vs Jeep
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-05-02 AT 07:42Â PM (GMT)]I have been around the civilian versions of both. The HMMWV is big and expensive (3-4 times the cost of a jeep). When doing serious off road, the jeep is more capable because it can fit through tight spots, like between trees and boulders, that would thwart a HMMWV. When it gets stuck (all off-roaders do), the jeep is easier to get un-stuck due to lighter weight. The jeep also benefits from a huge supply of after market parts. The HMMWV is better if you need to haul a lot of stuff. For practical purposes, a 4 wheel drive pickup truck beats both. Toyota anyone?
Can’t spell.

RE: Hum-vee Vs Jeep
I must say, when I saw a Jeep up close, I was amazed at how small it was!! It also seemed to be quick off the mark at low speeds.
Is the Humvee a better off roader then the Jeep?

RE: Hum-vee Vs Jeep
Now, imagine a few guys in a crappy, small, old, worn-out cheap car being chased by an Humvee through forest trails or an old city. And discover the weakness of the mastodonth: it is way too big to maneuver through small trails or narrow streets. It will definately an excellent all-terrain vehicle if the terrain is open enough, but from personal experience i can tell you that a Trabant can in plenty of cases be a better way of transport. Let alone a plain jeep.

RE: Hum-vee Vs Jeep
If you folks are actually talking about the WWII Jeep, there is a world of difference between it and the HV. The HV is miles ahead.

RE: Hum-vee Vs Jeep
The Humvee has poor acceleration but it does have a level of protection against rifle rounds… unlike the Jeep. (It is no APC however).
There is more power and it can almost go anywhere much like the jeep.
The wide low body means it is very difficult to roll which is always a good feature when new recruits are driving.
It also seems bigger and therefore probably has more capacity.
