The exploits of the F-100 in the skies over Southeast Asia are well known during the late 1960’s, but I thought it would be fun to start a discussion about what the F-100 was up to after the Vietnam War. From what I understand, the Turks operated them over Cyprus in 1974, and indeed Denmark and Turkey both operated them into the 1980’s with France and the United States operating them until around 1978-1979 I believe (Not sure when Taiwan retired theirs). In any case, I’m assuming in all cases their primary role was air-to-ground so what munitions were carried on the F-100 later in its service life? Same stuff as had been used in Vietnam? What about the AIM-9 Sidewinder? Did any F-100’s get more advanced versions of the AIM-9 later in life?

Not post Vietnam but i know the F-100 left nearby Wethersfield in 1970, sadly bringing to a close the majority of flying at the ‘field’. Not sure when they finally left Lakenheath though to be replaced by the F-111.
Incidentally one crashed a couple of miles from Duxford right in the middle of a road. Thread here;

The Lakenheath F-100s were actually replaced by F-4Ds which in turn were later replaced by the F-111Fs.

After this thread sort of died here, he re-posted it there to try to get more discussion going… and there it is seeing much more participation than here.
I guess he should have asked about Hunters or Lightnings.

http://bbs.tiexue.net/post_1369206_1.htmlROCAF, 11th Group flew F-100A until 1984. 48th Squadron was the last F-100A squadron of the world.
ROCAF F-100A retired in September 1984, after three crashed in June, July, and August 1984; one crash per month.

What I remember most of all about the F-100 (and it’s the Danish ones that used to come into Leuchars a lot that I remember the most) was the bang when the afterburner kicked in. That and the smoke trails.
There were still F-100s kicking around in Europe until “fairly recently” as some of the ex Danish ones were used as target towing aircraft by FSI before they were replaced by ex-Israeli A-4s.
One of my Lakenheath show memories is going into the maintainance sheds and seeing a Hun split in two having an engine change.

Actually Turkish F-100’s made it to 1987. I believe outside of the United States, Turkey was the largest operator, and it was quite some time before they were all replaced. This is part of what begs my question. Even in the 70’s and into the 80’s the F-100 was still around so I’m just wondering what all types of weapons they were carrying and what missions they were doing in those times. I realize many people are probably going to write the thread off with responses referencing the fact that it was old even then and that newer jets were around, but I’d just like to see what all we can come up with on the Hun in its later years.
As for the person who was at Lakenheath…So what was the F-100 like to watch fly and what did it sound like?

The first proper airshow I went to down South was the RAF Lakenheath open house on 6th July 1970.
Ah, the days of minimal security. We had been round the whole airfield by the time the USAF woke up to the fact that there were two bus loads of scottish spotters wandering round the field.
The one and only time I ever saw a C-133 flying when it arrived for the static park.
F-100s galore…

F100 disposals
A couple threads that contain details about the F100 disposals via RAF Sculthorpe in the late 1970s. 🙂

Regarding the Danish F-100’s:
If I recall correctly, they had Bullpup and possibly also Sidewinder missiles. They were also fairly soon modified to take Martin-Baker ejection seats
Most of them were retired in late 1981. All surviving F-100D’s (which were USAF property) were transferred to the Turkish Air Force during 1981/1982, so I should have thought that they were active beyond 1982 in Turkey.

List of all Danish F-100’s here:

The F-100 was out of all USAF squadrons by 1972.
Several hundred F-100Ds (single seat ground attack) & a hundred F-100F (combat trainer & Wild Weasel I) served in the Air National Guard in various states, but all F-100D/Fs were gone from the ANG by 1979, replaced by F-4s, A-7s, & A-10s.
Denmark & Turkey retired their F-100s in 1982.
France retired the last of theirs in 1978.
Taiwan is nearly impossible to get public-sector info from, and Fight’s On: Airborne With the Aggressors (Tim Laming, 1996) {about aggressor & drone aircraft} claims that Taiwan might still be operating some of their F-100D/Fs at that date.
Don Chan on the Modern Military section has an extensive knowledge of Asian air forces… he should be able to provide a date for Taiwan’s retirement of their F-100s if anyone can.

I thought I’d bump this just once to see if it gets any hits and if not then I’ll move it to the Modern Forum. Thanks!
