These three early 1950s 611 MK 2 cartridge start containers from Hunter F.1 WT660 are really too far gone to restore – their brown paint is more or less holding all the tinware together.
Does anyone know of a source where they are still available?
I used to have a few when I was a kid, and used them as pencil cases, etc – but now there is hardly anything about them on the internet…

My brother-in-law was an aircraft electrician with the FAA at RNAS Lossiemouth from the first Buccaneer S1 arrivals in the early 1960s until the Gannets left in ’78.
In the late 1960s he came home with a cartridge and container for me from an FAA Hunter, so I buffed up the cartridge and kept my school pencils in the container.
Recently I had been wondering what had happened to them, as it’s not like me to throw things out, but my son answered that question when he saw these photos – he used the same container for his school coloured pencils and pens, and it’s still around somewhere…:)

Really excellent, and I love the way you have done the sponsor sign, it matches the decalling and does not detract from the item, a good result all round.

Looks fantastic. HHA have been exceptionally generous. Sounds like a result all round.
As I type this, I glance at my two brass start carts which Mrs camlobe keeps in presentable condition. These were a gift from FRADU in the ’80’s when they operated some nice Hunter’s and Canberra’s.

Very nice Al, as we all seem to be Magpies on this forum, wouldn’t it be nice if ALL the artifacts were in such pristine condition that we have?.
Restores my faith in human nature, a donation like that. OUTSTANDING !!

Many thanks to Mick at Hawker Hunter Aviation – three beautiful cartridges and canisters dropped through my letterbox this afternoon!
I’ll post some photos when I’ve refurbished WT660’s starter panel…

Hi – You are welcome to collect some cart cannisters and some dead carts if you wish from HHA at Scampton. PM me and we can arrange if you wish.

Thanks for the replies guys – I’ll try those mentioned. The actual cartridges would be nice, but the brown containers with the popper lids would suffice to restore the starter access panel from underneath the fuselage…
This went on eBay a while back…

Hunter starter cartridges
Try the Hunter Club at Exeter, which is where this one came from and since donated to Brooklands Museum as there are two Hunters there.

Try contacting any of the operators of T.7 or T8 Hunters. There are a few around.
My memories are from working with the T-Birds on 208 Sqdn in the early 90’s. They had a similar stowage mounted on a hinged panel, under the middle of the fuselage.
Hope this helps.
