Hello all,
My apologies, this will sound like a very weird and bizarre question but please bear with me!
It relates to the Hunter FGA.78 that is displayed at the Yorkshire Aircraft Museum at Elvington – an ex-Qatar aircraft even though it’s currently in Dutch Air Force colours.
I am wondering if anyone out there has a photo, or other info, that shows clearly whether the V/UHF aerial on the spine panel immediately behind the canopy is positioned upright, i.e. pointing directly vertical, or slanted over to starboard as was the case with the RAF Hunters.
I know this must sound like a daft question but I am restoring the only other surviving FGA.78 cockpit and before I drill a flaming great hole to mount the aerial I need to know what angle it should be! The photos I have of the original aircraft are good, but because of the direction they were taken from, it’s hard to tell the angle of the aerial.
If anyone can help with this anorak question I’d be very grateful:)
Thanks…Mark

Yeah, I know it’s a good point David_Kavangh, but I can imagine the scene…
“…’ere, there’s some daft Welshman on the blower…wants to know if it sticks straight up or leans over…!” 😀
Maybe I’ll give them a call then…it could be fun!

MarkG,
Just a thought, but before you get the drill out after looking at any photos etc. may I respectfully suggest that you contact Elvington direct for the info you need? I’d hate to think that you missed the spot with your drill!!!
I’m sure they would love to help

Thanks very much Scott, I appreciate your efforts.
Attached is a pic of the beast in question when it was in service with the Qatar Emiri Air Force. I’m hoping to make it look this pretty again one day!

Hi Mark
tried to download a pic but its too big ill have to shrink it and try and send it again tomorrow. But it looks like the thing is straight on top and not off to one side.

Manonthefence – yes, I’ve replaced that panel as the original has long since disappeared. When I acquired the cockpit a panel from a Hunter F.1 was fitted. The F.1 had no aerial at all in that area nor the small access panel to the cabin pressurisation gubbins. I’ve got hold of a brand new panel of the right type but still need to drill and fit the aerial.
ukmams – yes we DO like nice piccies and that is a particularly splendid one I must say:). While it doesn’t help directly, it does illustrate my problem perfectly – from the angle at which most of these photos are taken you can’t tell whether the aerial is upright or angled over to starboard. It’s even worse with my Hunter as the aerial was more of a “shark fin” shape rather than the parallel sided thing on the RAF ones. That makes it more difficult to tell from most photos. Thanks anyway, great pic!
scott c – thank you very much, I would appreciate it.
I’ll post a photo of my Hunter when it was in service later – maybe we can have a poll on whether you think the aerial is upright or leaning. 😀

Hunter XE597
MarkG
Don’t know if this helps, it’s hunter related but an FG9.
But it’s a nice piccie of XE597 in flight sometime prior to 1981.
We like nice piccies anyway – don’t we all??
Shame the nose got cut off…

Mark
Frivalous question, but if you are restoring a FGA.78 cockpit, then surely the holes are already there??
Doh.. you may have put new metal in place, sorry
