COLD WAR FIGHTERS ARE A BLAST FROM THE PAST
BY MIKE BYRNE
11:40 – 22 April 2008
A ghost of the Cold War is set to take to the skies over Exeter next month.
A Mig 17 fighter, stalwart of the Soviet air force in the 1950s and 1960s, will be flying into Exeter Airport – one of a number of exotic planes from the past due to visit as guests of Hunter Flying Ltd, based in Hangar 52.
As well as the Mig, a Strikemaster jet, based on the RAF’s old Provost trainer, and a rare Fairey Gannet, a naval anti-submarine aircraft with two, four-bladed, counter-rotating propellers, are on their way to the city.

I think that the LiM 5 (Mig 17) from Bournemouth will not be going to Exeter afterall.

Well given that no-one on here has reported that the Lim-5 (MiG-17) isn’t actually at Bournemouth any more, perhaps I will.
It went to North Weald instead.

Anymore news on this?

Looks like I was right about the MiG.

The report also states that Hunter Flying Ltd help keep 13 Hunters in Royal Canadian Air Force colours in the air?.MELVYN
Not sure on the numbers, but that is basically correct.
As for the rest of it-oh well!

Evening everyone
There has been a lot of speculation with regard to Hunter Flying and the forthcoming arrivals due at Exeter.
The facts are. The Mig-17 (only one) will not be flying into Exeter, but it will be arriving by road. The same goes for the Strikemaster. The Gannet is still in an ongoing situation and negotiations are still continuing. At this moment in time, no decision has been taken as to when this aircraft will be arriving.
One final thought. Don’t believe everything you read in the press.

Thanks for the info. What is going to happen to the MiG-17 and Strikemaster (and maybe Gannet)?? Are they being restored to airworthy condition?

Think they mean Northern Lights Combat Air Support, whom are based in Canada but are civilian registered and contracted to carry out military taskings.

Someone from Kennet recently posted on the forum suggesting that XL500 is taking low priority behind the SeaFires.
I know for a fact that John Sparks has made enquiries about 500 and I have submitted a transport costing, but that was towards the back end of last year.

What happened to the Gannet that got stuck at Goose Bay or wherever it is a few years back?
It’s still there… 🙁

Possibly, although I have not had word of her moving yet.

What I would like to know is which MiG-17 is it, the only ones I know to be airworthy are in the states and some still in service with some minor countries.
What I think you will find is that Hunter Flying are taking on the MiG-17 from Bournemouth and a Gannet from somewhere for restoration.
I await the outcome with baited breath.
Possibly the Kennet Gannet??

What! 😮 As there are no Gannets airworthy (right?), i presume this is a ****-up??
If the Mig thing is true then I’ll be there if I’m free!

Which gannet would that be then? I didn’t think there were any flying at the moment.
Sounds like a good day, shame its a little to far for me to travel but the sight of a Mig 17 would be superb.
