Hunter newbie questions

Hello chaps. Im a real newbie to avation and since seeing G-PSST, MISS-D at elvington, I have developed a liking for the hunter, amongst others. so i apologise in advance if my questions about the aircraft are of the newbie type 😮
from what i can gather the pods under the wings of the hunter are called drop tanks, what exactly are they, fuel tanks of some kind ? ……… When did the hunter end its service with the RAF and RN and is it still in service anywhere else in the world………..? thanks

The last FRADU Hunter sortie took place on 19th February 1995, in T.8C XF994/873.

You can also get 150 gallon droptanks from Swiss stocks too.

Personally I wouldn’t mind a 100 gal tank, for nostalgic reasons.

Good choice!

The Hunter’s ‘drop tanks’ come in two capacities – a 100 gallon version (recognisable by the small fins on the rear end) and a 230 gallon version which was not jettisonable.

The Swiss Hunters were retired in 1995, about the same time that the last Hunter GA.11s were retired from RN (actually FRADU) service.

Sometimes HHA will allow their aircraft to be re-registered for military use, according to their website – [click].

In both cases it is feasible that is what has happened, but don’t quote me on it. I’m just saying you have to keep this in mind.

I think the swiss were the last to phase out hunters in the 80’s weren’t they guy’s? not bad going for a design 30-40 years old

I suppose the RAF are the last military user – leasing HHA’s fleet…. 😀

we have our Hunter cockpit open this weekend, so come up to North East Aircraft Museum and have a play! Failing that, I’m sure most hunter owning museums would let you dribble over their hunters if you asked.

is that advertsing?……..

Try here – [click] first, but a search on google will answer your initial questions.

Yes, drop tanks = expendable fuel containers that can be jettisoned after use. In wartime use, drop tanks may be jettisoned whether or not they are empty, to enable any plane so equipped to reach it’s performance envelope unhindered.

Hunters still operate privately in defence supporting roles, I believe, here and there.
