Hunter on the M5

Saw (what I believe to be) a very stripped Hunter cockpit being towed on the M5 North (junc 2-1) yesterday afternoon. Didn’t get a close look as I went past at a fairly rapid rate of knots.

Just a bit of idle curiosity regarding who/what/where??

Thanks for that – I’ll keep my eye out for that bit – can’t remember whether I’ve seen it and just not realised it was a Hunter… 😮

That’s an unusual configuation!!!

Hinged canopy / hinged radome / side access panels on the nose? Was all that done for the filmwork then?

Yes, the opening sequence to ‘Octopussy’ where Roger Moore dressed as Gen El.Torro attempts to place a bomb in the nose, but is captured, eventually succeeding when the SAM he evades with his BD-5 blows up the whole hanger…. etc, etc…..

Dave,
Where did it go after it left you?

I was in the funny coloured Volvo that went past with lots of flashing lights

mlc,
I was the one hiding behind the steering wheel, hoping you’d keep going. 😉 – Only Joking!

Whats the plans for her once you have stripped her for spares?
All the best Matt

Matt,
The nose and rearmost belly panels are going to WN957

The front belly panels are going elsewhere.

What’s left will be a flat bottomed section, emcompassing the cockpit floor, extended from the windscreen to the front bulkhead. At the moment I’m thinking of kitting it out as a wheelchair/aged accessible F6 cockpit display, but I’ll have to see how my other commitments pan out.

Cheers,

Mike 🙂

Looking at the two side by side, I would hazard that there wont be very much left….

That was me ….

Hunter F6, N-202 (Ex- Dutch AF, Pinewood Studios Etc..) heading ‘Up-North’ to provide parts for my Hunter F5, WN957 and others.

She was recovered from a Torquay Nightclub, a couple of years ago, where she was wall mounted. Hence she’s pretty well stripped out and cut off behind the windscreen.

Cheers,
Mike
