Al is quite a character and I’ve known him since the late 1970s when he and I were part of the intrepid band who started the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

With me, and three others, he was one the museum’s first Directors working on the airfield from where Al took off on his ‘mission’.

From time to time he randomly ‘phones me…and always has some tale or other.

On his lounge wall hangs Mike Rondot’s painting of the Hunter going between the top span of the bridge and a Routemaster bus.

I met Alan on several occasions. His passion for aviation heritage was obvious. He arranged a limited edition print of Nicolson VC Hurricane signed by 50 of the people involved. Nice chap. After Flypast ran the article and painting of the Hunter, I asked my grandfather what he thought…..I expected him to have been unimpressed. Au contraire! He said brilliant fun. He went to fly his oxford under the Severn Bridge and met a Mosquito coming the other way!

Sounds a great jape, but am sure there will be plenty of others who see this as a reckless stunt.

Tickled me though!
