Hunter Under Tower Bridge

With the RAF’s 90th birthday looming I was just recalling my old friend “Al” Pollock’s little adventure to mark the 50th, when he took off from Tangmere in a 1 Squadron Hunter (XF442) en route for West Raynham and famously (or infamously!) took her under the top span of Tower Bridge. The story is well known, of course, but what happened to XF442? I recall seeing her at Chivenor or Brawdy later on with a dayglo outline of Tower Bridge under her cockpit rail.

If the RAF are not going to properly mark the 90th, then maybe someone will mark the 40th of “Al’s” little adventure with a Tornado or something??!! 😎

Rocketeer/Tangmere1940

There are two versions of this painting, one in the crewroom of No 1(F) Squadron and a second copy painted for Al Pollock. I have a not very good photo of the first, but I am sure Al Pollock will be pleased to take a piccy of his, the better version, for you. We all have digital cameras and email now.

Copyright remains with the artist but I am happy for the image to be reproduced for non-commercial purposes, and wish your Hunter gathering every success.

Thankyou Mike, the gathering did go well….11 cockpits turned up….if I can get a copy it would be nice for the displays we do.
Regards and lovely paintings Mike

What makes you think I didn’t???!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 😉

PS….The caption in my album to the cockpit shot is “I’ll take this one!”

Nice to see a shot of this one- she now resides at Doncaster, back on her wheels.

To answer Pete Truman’s earlier question; it was 4 April 1968.

Blimey, that was my ex-wife’s 16th birthday, thats why he did it then, he was trying to find the party.

This thread is confusing me!

In post 28 you said the Hunter weekend was at Tangmere but you have also said it is at Newark. Can you confirm which?

Wherever it is, why not invite Alan Pollock? Sit in him a Hunter…make a mock up cut-out of Tower Bridge to frame it all and take a nice picture to post here so as to replace the one I posted earlier:D

Sorry Tangmere1940 and all!! A real senior moment…put it down to flying too much in the chinook!!! shook me brain!!

The event I am referring to is at Newark in June….sorry….btw thanx for posting the piccie

just thought it sad to deprive the wider audience of seeing a superb painting of an amazing event that should be more celebrated than it is….no offence intended.

Tony

OK…here it is again, by popular demand and without further comment. I have added a picture of Al Pollock and other Hunter jockeys at Tangmere said to have been taken minutes before he took off for return to West Raynham. Al is on the right enjoying a can of Pepsi. The others, l to r, are F/O Becker, F/O Hingley and F/O Wilcox. To answer Pete Truman’s earlier question; it was 4 April 1968.

I am the ‘Twonk’ Rocketeer. There are two sides to every story as you should well know. The ‘scan’ he used was mine, it had a pencil mark on it which was a slip of my pencil, I doubt if his pics have that same mark in the same place. He was told to ask before using, which, to me sounds reasonable. He then made an ‘issue’ out of it culminating in his post above. Do you think he would have removed that if he was in the right?
As I told him, I don’t mind people using any image I put on here as long as they ask. Now Rocketeer, what would you do in my position. Or would you rather be a ‘Twonk’?

Best Wishes.

According to Mike Rondot’s painting, commissioned by Al, the tail letter was H.

I thought the Tower bridge Hunter was XE624/G ??

There was an article in – you guessed it – Fly Past around 1982, written by Alan Pollock himself. He stated, his regular mount was not available so he flew XF442 that day.

Major Chris Draper DSC flew under 15 of the 18 Thames bridges in 1953 at age 61 in a rented Auster.
He did this in protest at the way Government was treating ex servicemen.
He flew under 2 bridges circa 1930 for the same reason, cant remember the a/c type !!
By pure coincidence 😉 there was a press photographer near Westminster ? Bridge.

Didn’t Draper fly under the Tay Railway Bridge while based at Dundee during WW1?

Best wishes
Steve P
