Anyway why stick RAF roundels on an aircraft that never saw service with the RAF? It’s presence in original (if slightly incomplete) markings is testament to the fact we used to have a great aircraft industry that earned lots of money exporting aircraft.

Delighted to see the excellent progress being made at MAM. Like us, it went through the doldrums at one point, with comparatively little seeming to happen. Good to see it has come out the other side, and real progress being made.

I shall be paying a visit in the not too distant future.

Great ‘before and after’ pic Les, sure hope i do make it this weekend, i’ve wanted to see her repainted for soooo many years, don’t think i’ve ever seen her ‘as new’, and i’ve been visiting the museum for about 15 years!

Meanwhile (and just walking around Albert’s little moan :rolleyes: ), thought you all may like to see the transformation over just 18 days. 1st pic was taken on 26 Aug, 2nd pic taken today. Doesn’t take yonks to re-paint a kite, just motivation.

Good point. Does this mean theres a chance of the Saudi Government reclaiming back the aircraft? Personally i think they look better in the good ole RAF roundel.

What’s wrong with that? I read somewhere that the Saudi government only allowed the Lightnings to be displayed in museums with the guarantee that they weren’t repainted in Saudi colours, is this why?

Yes i know there is 2 lightnings Les ! sorry i was refering to the F6 !! The T55 is in quite good shape and just needs light touching up and probably a clean by now !!!!

Im going to be up at MAM this weekend working away so something might get done before the winter sets in !!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers, i’m currently learning to drive and when i’ve done this and got a car i plan to help out at an aviation museum/project, i’m currently trying to decide which one. MaM is one of the options, and so far its winning (i.e. need of help, location e.t.c.), maybe i could ‘adopt’ an aircraft like several volunteers have…. hmmm choices choices. Do you know if the chap fixing up the Canberra will be there next weekend? I’m thinking of going and having a quick look after work and wouldn’t mind a look in the Canberra if possible

Apparently the Prentice and Argosy are in quite bad shape.

First let me say I have no connection with MAM. I go frequently, but as a paying visitor, because they have the only other extant and really accessible Canberra PR.3 in the world! And a friend of mine has brought it back to some semblence of life.

However, over coffees etc, I understand that a single volunteer has been working on the Prentice for a while now but can only do 1 day a week. Why not go along and see if you can help out? I realise you don’t have wheels RL but anybody can go and help out I reckon.

Also, it seems a start was made on the Argosy a couple of weeks back and from what I can see the undercarriage areas are nearly finished. The top and upper surface areas have been inspected I’m told and are in good order. The worst paint area is the leading edges, which of course is all that people see, the rest is just faded (UV action). The fuselage, booms and engines will probably not get done until next year though – again, lack of bodies.

For your interest, the Beaver has been brightened up by “T-cutting” the existing paint rather than a complete repaint – again lack of bodies I think. My understanding is that most of their volunteer effort has lately gone into the Vulcan making it presentable for the recent re-naming ceremony (by Coventry’s Lord Mayor I believe). The tin triangle is now named City of Coventry with a rather natty coat of arms on the nose.

After the aircraft currently being repainted have been, whats next? Apparently the Prentice and Argosy are in quite bad shape. Hopefully the Hunter will come in from the elements when the new hangar is built, it’s a fantastic museum
