Hunters, Bulldogs, Dominies and Coffee.

Today I just sat and drank coffee and gazed out upon a line of six Hunters; close by was a neat line of six black Dominies; two Bulldogs played around in the circuit; a Chipmunk took off; a DC-3 was parked in the distance.
I had no camera or notebook with me, so I could just take in the atmosphere of just another day at the wonderful Cotswold Airport ( aka the former RAF Maintenance Unit at Kemble). The coffee was just £1-50 and the cup was china.

Just wanted to share the fact that sometimes the sheer magic of vintage aviation is informal and under our very noses.

Hardly wasted, they have done 40 years service. There comes a time when it makes more sense to use them as saucepans. Not every airframe can or indeed should make it into preservation.

to take airworthy a/c or at least ones that can be run up, and then melt them down is a waste. Be it ground instruction, static display or saving lives or retired in a museum its better than breaking them up.

Six Ex RAF Dominies arrived at Kemble the week before the show for temporary storage, all with US-civil registrations. They were all there during the air show. Stories vary, but one said that three will go to the US for pilot training and three will remain in store for spares. Quite why anyone would want these 40-year old crew trainers with thirsty Viper engines is beyond me?

Fuel’s cheaper in the States……… I think;)

I had wondered if they had finished, heard things weren’t going well.
I realise that there are various businesses inhabiting different areas of the site, and the harsh realities of the economic climate but just musing on how nice it would be to have a coherent collection in that part of the country – can but dream.:)
Of course very nearby Hullavington is another nice place to spend time.

Kemble strikes me as a great place to create both an aircraft and airfield museum.
The south site is RAF Expansion Era heaven with many of the original buildings and hangars still standing and in very good condition, and most faced in local Cotswold stone. The gas decontamination centre is one of the best surviving examples I have seen, complete with the original china bleach foot and shower trays.
Aviation wise the Bristol Aero Collection is housed there, along with Delta Jets, and it lays claim to both RAF and USAF maintenance usage.

Great idea, but firstly Delta Jets no longer exist, as they have gone into administration and secondly you would have to terminate all the businesses that occupy those hangars you mention, which bring in revenue to the airfield. The Bristol Aero Collection struggles simply because of its location and they would desperately like to move the collection to larger premises at Filton, but with no funding from Bristol Council even to house Concorde there, they are stuck!

Consequently with no financial backing a larger museum at Kemble is a non-starter. It was hoped it would be the UK’s jet warbird centre, but in the current economic climate, things are somewhat shakey.

I thought we agreed that AV8 was closed for the duration of the show ???

Can anyone get to AV8 when there’s a show on ??

Ken

Please try to keep up Ken – look at the date the poster said he was there – 24th(Friday) not last weekend during the show and ‘yes’ AV8 was closed during the show! :p It would make sense to close during the shows, or the place would be overrun with freeloaders! No doubt the gate on the north side was also manned. BTW a large piece of lovely home-made fruitcake at AV8 is £1.50…yummy!

Complete thread drift for which I apologise, but would you be interested in a TU-154M nose gear door at all Ken?

Sorry, back to AV8 cakes!

For the record, I am definitely not staff, just a passing punter taking advantage of the summer sunshine today. Sorry that I did not take a note of the cake prices, but a bacon sarnie, with service at a table in the AV8, overlooking the airfield, was IMO, a reasonable £3-00. Comparing prices with a run of the mill Costabucks, I do not know how they do it for the money.

As I’m not far from there – maybe I’ll come and join you !!

There are still quite a number of HS/BAe 125 in service world-wide. I’m sure there is demand for type-certification training for them.

The BAe 125 Series 700 aircraft and later came from the factory with the Garrett/Honeywell TFE731-3RH turbofan engines (or improved variants of this engine).

The BAe 125 series 1000 had Pratt & Whitney Canada PW-305 turbofans.

Perhaps the buyer intends to re-engine them?

well at least they wont be wasted like so many other useful airframes. There is no excuse that aircraft cannot be donated to museums even if they have to collect them and cover costs.

Hopefully that will soon be my ‘home’ airfield if I can sort out the Bulldog share (as in convince the Mrs) 😀 With all the shenanigans going on in Jersey with the club and the new PPR requirements I’m going to move clubs, and after visiting several people on Sunday at the airshow, I’m quite looking forward to flying from there.

Good to hear the coffee isn’t too exhorbitant, but I really DO need to know how much the CAKE costs :p

Much prefer Kemble to Cotswold Airport though.

Wholly agree with that comment. It’s like ‘Halfpenny Green’ being renamed to ‘Wolverhampton International Airport’, or was that ‘Spaceport’? Ideas well above their station…. but the CAKE was also quite nice there, as indeed was Shobdon :diablo:
