Bush visits hurricane-hit Florida

The hurricane was the worst in Florida for more than a decade
President George W Bush is in Florida to see for himself the devastation caused by a hurricane that killed at least 13 people and left many homeless.
He joined his brother, Florida State Governor Jeb Bush, for a helicopter flight over the worst-hit areas.

Emergency workers are still picking their way through the debris. Initial estimates put the damage to property between $5bn and $11bn.

The hurricane also hit North and South Carolina but in a weaker form.

‘Freak hurricane’

In Florida, people are still working to salvage their possessions two days after Hurricane Charley struck.

Your Say: Are you affected?
In pictures: Hurricane’s path
Punta Gorda, a town of some 15,000, took the full force of the storm, with few buildings left untouched.

President Bush has declared the region a disaster area, which means federal funds can be spent on the clean-up.

Both Mr Bush and Democratic candidate John Kerry appear to be trying to play down any political aspect to the disaster in Florida – a crucial state in November’s presidential election, correspondents say.

Mr Kerry has said he does not intend to visit Florida in the aftermath of the hurricane so as not to disrupt relief work.

Packing winds of up to 145mph (230km/h), Charley came ashore on Friday at 1550 (1950 GMT) at Punta Gorda, catching many residents unprepared because it was believed the storm would hit further north.

The hurricane ploughed across central Florida, uprooting trees and power lines, and dumping heavy rains.

More than one million people were left without electricity and hundreds of thousands without water.

Anne Correia, who hid in a wardrobe in her flat in Punta Gorda, said she could “hear the nails coming out of the roof”.

“The walls were shaking violently, back and forth, back and forth,” she said.

Before reaching land in Florida, the hurricane increased to category four – the second most severe on the five-level Saffir-Simpson hurricane intensity scale.

Florida officials say Charley is the worst storm to hit their state since 1992 when Hurricane Andrew caused billions of dollars worth of damage in Miami.

lots of flights at orlando international tampa and all in path of huricane have been cancelled and key west is still closed and this hurricane has been declared the worst in United States history killing at least 60 and causing $11 billion.

I don’t think that is correct. It’s way to early for an official $$dollar amount to be estimated and only 13 deaths have been reported. This storm wasn’t nearly as bad as previous hurricanes. Andrew caused between $20-25 billion back in 1992 and killed 23 people. Adjust that for inflation and it’s a truly amazing dollar amount.

I double checking my answer above when I came across this bit of info.

During World War II, tropical cyclones were informally given women’s names by US Army Air Corp and Navy meteorologists (after their girlfriends or wives) who were monitoring and forecasting tropical cyclones over the Pacific. From 1950 to 1952, tropical cyclones of the North Atlantic Ocean were identified by the phonetic alphabet (Able-Baker-Charlie-etc.), but in 1953 the US Weather Bureau switched to women’s names. In 1979, the WMO and the US National Weather Service (NWS) switched to a list of names that also included men’s names.

Leave it up to the Army Air Corp. 🙂 Perhaps if we knew who Betty was or Andrea we would expect the hurricane’s distructive force to be that equal to or greater than a storm name Hurricane Killer or Hurricane Smasher. 😉

Now I think we all have a few names we could suggest for these killer storms. 😀

Here are the upcoming Hurricane names for the next few years:

http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/B2.html

There are a few women I see in 2007 that are going to be some terrifying storms. 🙂

And here are the list of retired names:

They use to be given only names of women (Similar to boats) but a number of years ago they began alternating between men and women names every other hurricane season.

As the storms form (initially Tropical Depressions) they are numbered (or perhaps lettered) in the order they form. TD 1 (or A), TD 2 (B). Then if they form into a full blown Hurricane they are given a name based on the order in which they formed orginally. So if the second Tropical Depression of the season forms into a Hurricane its given a name that begins with the letter B (Bonnie or Bill depending on the season). It’s possible that that the first Hurricane will be named Elvira if the first 4 TD’s didn’t form Hurricanes (A, B, C, D). They also don’t try to repeat names (at least as much as they can) to avoid instilling paranoia or at least so we can keep them seperate. Hugo was the really bad one years ago so we’ll probably not see that name used again.

Ah it all makes sense now, and as Bob Dylan would say “This is the story of the Hurricane” 😀

Why do they give Hurricane’s daft names like Charley and Bonnie, making them sound like a cuddly pet animal ?

Why not something more appropriate like Hurricane Ripper or Hurricane Trailer Trasher ? Hmmm???

This hurricane is destructive! It blew my trailer at least 100 feet into my next door neighbour’s lot.

Oh man, this quote is hysterical. We all make trailer jokes but sure enough it happens time and time again. 😀

Hurricane strikes Florida coast

The hurricane was stronger than expected
Hurricane Charley has slammed into the coast of Florida, ripping up trees and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.
Packing winds up to 145mph (230km/h), Charley hit land on the Gulf coast south of Tampa, causing a tidal surge of up to 15 feet (4.6m).

A woman and a young girl were killed in separate traffic accidents in Florida, and at least three people died in Cuba.

The authorities say they have evacuated 1.4 million people from at-risk areas.

Thousands of National Guard troops have been put on standby.

“This is the nightmare scenario that we’ve been talking about for years,” said hurricane centre director Max Mayfield.

‘Serious storm’

Charley reached landfall at 1550 (1950 GMT) on Friday, just south-west of Fort Myers, and about 160 miles (257km) south-east of the Tampa Bay area, the most populous region on Florida’s west coast.

This hurricane is destructive! It blew my trailer at least 100 feet into my next door neighbour’s lot.

Jack Griswald, Miami

Your Say: Are you affected?
In pictures: Hurricane’s path
Winds ripped off the roof of a hurricane shelter where more than 1,000 people were seeking refuge, while small plans at the airport in Charlotte County were torn apart.

Walt Disney World theme park in Orlando was closed while flights were halted at Orlando airport.

Ten navy ships stationed near Jacksonville were sent out to sea, the navy said.

“This is a serious, serious storm,” said Florida Governor Jeb Bush, estimating the cost of repairs at more than $15bn.

President George W Bush has declared the region a federal disaster area, which means federal funds can be spent on the clean-up.

“Our prayers are with you and your families tonight,” he said from Seattle.

Before reaching land, the hurricane increased to “category four” – the second most severe on the five-level Saffir-Simpson hurricane intensity scale.

Residents along Florida’s south-western coast had been boarding up their homes and stocking up on water, tinned food and batteries.

“There is not much that scares me in this world, but this is one of them,” said one of them.

Schools and government offices were closed on Friday.

Meteorologists say this could be the worst storm to hit the US since 1992 when Hurricane Andrew caused billions of dollars worth of damage in Miami.

At least three people died when the hurricane passed over western Cuba on Friday.

Charley has also been blamed for one death in Jamaica on Thursday.

In a rare gesture, the US offered Cuba $50,000 (about £28,000) to help pay for damage caused by the hurricane. 🙁 R.I.P to victims

I could have been in Florida now, we planned a trip arriving at Key West and coming back from Orlando. Southwest also flies to Florida, they obviously don’t need to cancel flights?

It’s just about made its way across the Florida peninsula as it tracks NE. Winds are about 105 mph, having died down from the original 127 mph. It’ll pick up more strength as it makes it’s way off shore. It looks like Daytona Beach is getting it now.

I don’t live in Florida, too hot and humid for my tastes. There were cancellations and delays through the southeastern US but nothing for myself as I’m off for another few days. 🙂
