Hurricane and Spitfire at Dunsfold, June 4

The Brooklands Vintage Wings and Wheels at Dunsfold, this coming Saturday, may not be the biggest display of the year but there are one or two things that make it just a little special.

The fly-in element is shaping up nicely and there will be interesting aeroplanes arriving from about 9am. Every effort will be made to park these in positions that make photography easier.

The motoring element has, as has been discussed elsewhere, the last two running Napier Lion aero engines, one in the Napier Railton – the car that still holds the outer circuit record at Brooklands and the Napier Bentley. This alone has to be worth the ticket price.

This year also sees the 60th anniversary of the ending of World War Two but also the 70th anniversary of the Hawker Hurricane’s first flight.

Not that many years ago there were just two airworthy Hurricanes left in the world, both Mark IIcs with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

At Dunsfold we will have three Hurricanes, the former Dunsfold-based Mark IIc PZ865 as well as the Fighter Collection Mark IV and Peter Vacher’s Mark I. This gives a spread of Hurricane variants that were extinct just a few years ago.

However, that is not all.

We are very fortunate that the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight have agreed to fly their genuine Battle of Britain veteran Spitfire MkIIa together with Peter Vacher’s genuine Battle of Britain veteran Hurricane Mark I. This will only happen three times this year and the Dunsfold team are very grateful to Peter Vacher and to OC BBMF for the honour of hosting one of these displays.

There are only two airworthy British Battle of Britain aircraft in the world and to be able to get these together at a show is a rare priviledge.

More details can be found at http://www.wingsandwheels.net

We look forward to seeing you there and hope you will support a team that is trying to bring you a new show, at a new venue.

See, I started making mistakes already! (tired)

it is ALMOST black, they had to borrow a canopy last week!

Yep – that’ll teach them to paint it black in the first place! Rumours are it could be the Alpha Jets going black next! Personally at this stage in its career ‘154 really ought to be heading to Cosford or Hendon…

Just got back from a press do. the first production Hawk has come in from Boscombe and was met by Duncan Simpson who flew it for the first time. Duncan will be there tomorrow and the Hawk will be on static. Duncan is a little more mobile!

Hi Guys

Just to ensure that I stay “on the fence” I’ll be taking both my digital and 35mm cameras (digital for the ground events and 35mm for the excellent flying displays that will be happening). The only thing I’m not looking forward to are the developing costs afterwards 🙁 !!! (Ooops, did I wobble in favour of digital there ?).

Anyway, should have some usable shots to post here afterwards. 😀

Oh yeah, the old fashioned 27 mega pixel stuff.

Hi Melvyn,

I still agree 35mm(or larger format) offers better overall quality, and was reluctant to accept that even 6 megapixel images could be anywhere near as good. Having investe din a modestly priced 6MP shooter last summer, I am fast becoming a convert to digital as I reckon the “convenience” is worth the tolerable loss in quality. No more boxes of paper prints and negs requiring storage space, and it makes posting images on the web or emailing photos to friends so much easier.

I used to be a digi-phobe, but since joining the world of the megapixels 12 months ago I’m not sure I’d ever go back to wet-films again. (Though I haven’t dumped my collection of trusty 35mm Canons yet – “Just in case” 😉 )

(35mm also seems so “old hat” now too 😮 ).
