Hurricane Crash Landing Info Please (Wartime)

Had a very interesting chat with a senior gentleman today regarding a Duxford based Hurricane that crash landed near Great Wilbraham between Cambridge and Newmarket circa September 1940. As a child he picked up a prop blade tip from it shortly afterwards, plus he showed me a letter related to the incident.
The thing is he would love to know the identity of the Hurricane.

Soooo over to you guys if you can help?

Cheers,
Rob

Right – having spoken further to the owner of the letter – the confusion is now a little clearer, as he confirms that the letter is from this Hurricane accident, but Pike was was not the pilot as originally thought.

A C 2 Pike was one of two men sent to guard the Hurricane, and during this standing guard the other guy is said to of climbed into the cockpit and somehow accidentally shot Pike with the aircrafts guns, possibly in the legs. The letter was subsequently sent maybe up to two months after the incident.

Hopefully now that makes more sense.

Funny you should query that, Dave, as I have a similar thread running on the RAF Commands forum here requesting info;

http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?21986-Hurricane-MkII-Z3082

And the same questions have been asked there.

Sorry, I forgot that you’d written that! It’s possible that the letter came from Duxford because they probably handled the aftermath of the incident. Another thought – what was an AC2 doing flying a Hurricane. Had he stolen it?!

Just to confirm, I believe that it was a Duxford Hurricane as there is a letter from the “Wing Commander, Commanding, RAF Station Duxford, Cambs” thanking a local chap for his initial assistance and first aid that he administered to the pilot immediately post accident, and who I believe subsequently made a full recovery.

Is there a possibility that such a letter would be sent representing a different RAF station to that from which the crashed aircraft came from?

Unfortunately, Rob, no dates are given but neither No 3 nor 607 Sqn were based at Duxford in 1940. 56 was based there at the time of the final crash. Maybe for the 1940 incident operating from Duxford ws just an assumption

Thank you Atcham, much appreciated. It now looks like this particular Hurricane had two accidents just over a year apart – and both happening in the same village. What are the chances of that.

Does it give a squadron that it was attached to in September 1940 by any chance?

The Air-Britain X and Z serials book gives the basic details that Z3082 served with 3/607/56 Sqns. Written off 13.12.41 when it flew into the ground at Great Wilbraham, Cambs.

No Hurricane experts on here who can shed a little more light on this one? I’m stunned! 🙁

If anyone can help I’d like to know a little more about this incident – such as the exact date and the squadron at Duxford that this particular Hurricane came from. As a starter I have seen a letter dated 14th September 1940 from the Station Commander (or signed on behalf of) thanking a local gentleman for his first aid help in helping the pilot, AC 2nd Albert Pike who was injured. Also what became of Z3082 afterwards would be great!
