Hurricane Drawing & Parts Lists?

Hi to all – my first post.

I am doing some research on the Hurricane and also the FW190 for an upcoming project which first requires fairly comprehensive lists of parts and drawings.

I have a few questions for the Hurricane content for which I would be grateful for any feedback on.

  1. First question – is there such a thing as a compiled list of all drawings used for the various aircraft Mks?
  2. From the information I have so far I have noted that some drawings are marked “do not use” which implies that they were either obsolete or superceded – but there are no confirmation notes for obsolete and there are no cross references for possible replacement drawings.
  3. I have also noticed some drawings that were created in the 1990, which I suspect were either new manufactured items or filling in the gaps of missing data – but again there is no links to existing data or cross references.
  4. ‘Provisional drawings’ with a prefix of SCSAT – were these actually used or just part of a design exercise?

One more question – were the wings constructed using a jig, similar to the spitfire wings and is there any documentation available for these jigs?

Thanks.

Hi Hugh,
Glad you liked the photo..once upon a time there were plenty of them!
Anyone recognise the location, UK or CCF..production?
Chumpy.

Hi Chumpy,

Thanks for the interesting pictures of the wing jigs. Given that the jigs look quite different to the ones on the Canadian National Aviation Museum website I guess they are of UK wing production?

Hi Chumpy,

Thankyou very much – this image will be very helpful and the quality is really quite good.

Now if I can just find a drawing for these jigs.

Hi Hugh,
Photo of a Hurricane wing jig, a good sturdy bit of kit by the look of it!

Cheers, Chumpy.

There is very little available for the ‘190 full stop. For the most complex single seat fighter of the second world war, that is quite surprising, but there are very, very few original drawings surviving.

Hi Steven,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I had a look at the huricanerestoration website which is very informative – but alas also expensive for the drawing copies. Their list of drawings though was very useful as a resource to add to what I have managed to collate so far.

I did not see a manual listed for the Hurricane, but they do have ‘interchangeability data sheets’ which may help.

The link to Canada Aviation museum was very interesting – thank you.

I see you are in Canada – I just finshed a job there last year in Toronto – was there for a few years – had a great time though the work was certainly challenging.

Regards

Hugh

Hi HughT,

The parts manual has a listing of drawings related to each part, however it’s my understanding that you first need the drawing for each mark which shows which assemblies apply to that mark (can’t remember what the common name is for this drawing) and then the assembly drawing showing what parts are related to which assembly.

It’s my belief that no comprehensive drawing listing is available relating drawings to each Mk.

A limited number of drawings and the parts manual can be purchased from:
http://www.hurricanerestoration.com
The parts manual has around 100 pages of parts illustrations which are very nice, the rest of the parts manual is rather tedious (and missing some pages).

A nice collection of low resolution photographs showing hurricanes being built in Canada is available at:
http://www.aviation.technomuses.ca/collections/image_bank/
Type “Hurricane” into the aircraft name search field and it return’s back around 195 images, many of which show Hurricanes under construction. Don’t know if the wing jigs they show are the same as the jigs used in the U.K. (I am interested to know!)

Good luck!!!! Hurricane and FW190, two aircraft which seem to have very little drawing information publicly available- you have your work cut out for you.
