Hurricane Ground Crew Wanted

Peter Vacher will be displaying his newly rebuilt Mk I Hurricane, R4118, the only Hurricane with Battle of Britain combat history still flying, during the 2005 air show season. It will be based at Cambridge Airport. Is there anyone who would like to help as ground crew on a REGULAR basis at Cambridge at weekends and perhaps to be able to drive to some of the airshows around the south of England (travelling expenses would be covered). If you are interested, please email Peter Vacher at pvacher@aol.com Many thanks.

Mk I Hurricane, R4118, the only Hurricane with Battle of Britain combat history still flying

For the record, Hurricane P3351 also flew operationally during the Battle of Britain. The book on the aircraft by Ian Brodie says on the 12th of July 1940 Red Section of No. 73 Sqn, including P3351, flew their first op since returning from France, on an escort mission. The leader of Red Section, P/O Smith, engaged in a dogfight with a Spitfire before they left Leaconsfield and ‘easily outmanouvred the latter’. After that P3351 seems to have only been on circuits and bumps, before it had a crash when undershooting the runway on the 21st of July. So, it didn’t have ‘combat history’ as such, but was indeed active for a short time and has operational history in the Battle of Britain.

Good God, I’d do it in a minute!! Those travelling expenses cover flights to and from my place here in Colorado? If so, I’m on board…

Good grief, people, I’d be grabbing this up so quick if it happened out here….

And I’m too far away and running the risk of being kicked out by her indoors for the time spent on the Dak project.

Shame it would have been fun!

his is a wonderfully temption offer, thanks very much for giving us the opportunity volunteer. I really would love to help Peter and the wonderful Hurricane, especially as I live in the next village to him and drive past his house daily.

However I am going to struggle to keep the commitments I have already made this season and Cambridge is just that bit too far for me on a regular basis. Perhaps when/if she moves more locally.

Thanks once again, this is a golden opportunity for someone.

likewise…if she relocates down this way, count me in
congratulations on a good job well done, can’t wait to see her out and about this season
