Hi all
I just wondered about the significance of this particular Hurricane II, seeing as Hendon had their FSM marked up as BE421 XP-G of 174 Sqn, and Corgi do a 1/72 model of it in the same markings?
As an aside, the F K Mason book ‘Hawker Hurricane – An Illustrated History’ has it listed as a ‘Mark IIE (sic)’, but I’ve read that the IIE prototype didn’t fly until March 1943, and BE421 was shot down in June 1942…
Cheers

Thanks for the reply Dave. I also asked the same question over on RAFCommands, and Graham has supplied the same info. I suspected as much bearing in mind the anomaly of the dates concerned, but it’s good to have it confirmed!

Probably no more significant than there is a good photograph of the aircraft
See attached.
I have discusssed the IIE designation in the past with Graham Boak who is also knowledgeable on 607 Squadron aircraft. 174 Squadron was formed from 607, and we believe that they retained there individual aircraft letters on receiving the XP codes, I have some photos showing BE505 with both XP & AF codes with the same individual letter. There is no mention in the ORB or any log book copies that I have. I suspect that it should be IIB and is merely a typographical error.
The IIE designation was the fore runner for the Mk IV which was later than the IIB.
