Looking to resolve an apparent discrepancy in the S/N of a Hurricane IIc involved in a fatal accident at Tetney, near Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England on 14th August 1942.
I have two choices either X3261 or Z3261 as recorded in the RAF accident report below.
FIGHTER COMMAND Interception practice 253 Squadron, RAF (Hibaldstow, Lincolnshire – 12 Group)
Hurricane IIC Z3261 – at 1530 made a steep climbing turn at 3000 feet and entered a spin. Recovery was made at 1000 feet, but a spin in the opposite direction immediately followed and Z3261 crashed into the ground 5 miles SE of Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
The pilot, a New Zealander was killed.
Can this quest be resolved by independant sources such as aircraft on strength at 253 Sqn during August 1942 or checking the fate of these two serial numbers?
