Hello all. I have a query about the Hurricane IId (tankbuster variant) which I hope someone will be able to help me with. I’ve been through all my Hurri books and every photo I can find but cannot determine which wing type the IId had – no-one seemed to have thought to take a picture of the top of the wing! By wing type I mean the gun access panels on the upper surface.
For the uninitiated, and as a reminder to the confused, the IIa and IIb had the same irregular hexaganol panels as the MkI as they had machine gun wing armament. The IIc however had two rectangular panels to access the Hispano cannon. I think the IId must have had the former, as it retained one Browning mg for sighting the Vickers S guns – but I am not sure! The Hasegawa model of this variant has the IIc wing, while other models have the IIa/b wing… does anyone know for sure??

Had a look on eBay for that book, but couldn’t see it….
I bid on one once but lost it. I should have got a mortgage and paid whatever it took!
PP, if there’s anything specific about the IId I’d be very grateful for a copy. I’ll PM you.

If you need any further info XN923 just drop me a message and can photocopy some info for you and post it off. Really is a good book. Unfortunatley they are indeed like gold dust as they are so good.

Thanks all, very helpful. PP, funny you mention the SAM Pubs book, I have been trying to get hold of one without much success. Their Spitfire books are my model making bible when it comes to that a/c but the Hurri one seems in very short supply.

Looking at the excellent SAM Publications book on the Hurricane the following information is confirmed in a number of chapters of the book. Namely the 3 view drawings at the rear of the book but also in an understanding the subject section which is effectively a three dimensional drawing of each variant and the differances highlighted by text located around the drawing
The IIb & IId had the irregular hexagonal access panels to the guns
IIc, IIe, IV & V features rectangular access panels.
Hope this helps.

Hurricane IV – P3395 “JX-B” (actually KX829) at the Thinktank, Birmingham has the “universal” wing.

Early IId were effectively IIa/b but I think that later production IId used the universal wing so you might find that there is no “standard”.
