Hurricane Mishap

I have attached a photograph of this weekends unfortunate Hurricane accident, which was taken from within B-17 ‘Sally B’. I was very fortunate indeed to be allowed a tour of this fabulous aircraft, when I saw the Hurricane heading straight for us!

My personal opinion is that a feat of supreme airmanship prevented an unfortunate accident from becoming something much worse – I only took the picture after the Hurricane had turned away from us and went nose down – no bravery award for me then!!!

Anyway, I don’t know who the Hurricane pilot was, but he should be applauded for his quick, calm and professional response to an extremely difficult situation.

Just wondering how Mr Spotter with bow n’ arrow case was walking down what appears to be ‘Air Side’ without any HiViz vest? or have I got it wrong???
Cheers…………….

As it came towards him he went all of a quiver?

Is this a trick of the camera or have we been extremely lucky here?

Looking at all the photographs posted I had supposed that the incident was well out in the field and being captured by Canon’s digital finest with massive telephoto lens.

The shot, attached, appears to show that the ‘collapsed gear’ induced ground loop terminated right on the flight line. 🙁

I believe that is correct – it groundlooped towards the flightline, so yes very lucky.

Can only just have stopped as the driver is still on board, just glad nobody was hurt.

Looks fairly safe to say that if I were that man in the picture I would be taking the appropriate steps in the other direction should a Hurricane be coming at me in that manner.

Was the Hurricane still moving at that point, theres no clouds of dust by the wing tips as seen in the photos of it occuring, the telephoto lens causes alot of distances to be misrepresented and angles alter things as well. 🙂

With any luck the prop will have absorbed the energy from the impact when the blades smashed – I suspect that it will be removed and checked before it’s put back in though. Unfortunately the prop blades are very expensive to replace.

Dr Fluffy says the damage isn’t as bad as it looked – and he’s in a good position to know!

😀 Laying underneath it with a spanner in his hand 😀 Nurse stethoscope please

Martin Claydon’s excellent Duxford Update website has some moment by moment pictures of the incident….

http://www.duxford-update.info/

As of last night the Hurricane was in the back of Hangar 2 at Duxford. Superficially the damage doesn’t look too bad, but who knows?

Or maybe they were preventing a fire in the event that the fuel leaked on to the hot engine…

I concur with that! I was further along from ‘Sally B,’ behind the fence, and the Hurricane was heading straight for me! I witnessed the whole event as I was captivated by its low pass and break for landing. I stayed by the fence to watch the landing and I would agree that the pilot did his utmost to stop the Hurricane leaving the grass. He seemed very pleased when he jumped onto the port wing after bringing the aircraft to a halt. I do recall a photographer by the tail of the B-17, so that must have been you?! To the right of me there was a woman with at least two small children.
