Hi all!
I’m looking for some pictures or profiles of Hurricane MkIIC’s and D’s with the 40mm cannons.
I’ve only found two profiles of the “D” version, but there must be more, and I bet you guy’s know were they are. I’m also very interested in Desert camos for 5, 6, 20, and 184 Squadrons RAF and 7 Squadron SAAF, which all operated the “D” version, but any other Desert camo MkIIC’s are also interesting for our project.
Thanks in advance, for any help.:)

Interesting.
I bet that flying boat crew wondered what the hell was hitting them if the rounds did indeed make contact.

There was one possible claim in North Africa. I can’t recall the reference, but IIRC the pilot loosed off some rounds at very long range at a flying boat, or some such. He wasn’t sure of the outcome but (again, this is a distant memory) I think it was discovered afterwards that an enemy plane did go missing in that area.

Hi PhantomII.
Just in case your wondering why I’m seaking info, it’s to skin models for European Air Wars. This is the model of “Our John” I’m working on at the moment. I try to make the planes as close as I can get, using the limitations of the flight sim engine. The skin has be painted by a friend of mine Dean, who lives in Aussie land, and I live in UK, and do the 3d mods. 🙂

I’d love it if you could turn up some more pics of either type, so we can make more planes.:)

Wow. You’re good.
Good luck on the other one.
If you want me to look for more photos I can try.
I’ve managed to get a knack for looking for specific photos of aircraft over the past several years.

Hi PhantomII!
I’ve managed to ID one of your pics. The Hurricane MkIIC with “QO” is from number 3 squdron RAF, who operated the planes from April 1941 to May 1943. still trying to ID the other one.:)

So did the Mk.IV see combat over mainland Europe late in the war?

From ‘Flying Guns: World War 2’ by Emmanuel Gustin and myself:
“The Hurricane IID saw most of its use with No.6 Squadron in North Africa between May 1942 and May 1943, although it was also used by Nos. 5, 20 and 184 and by No.7 Squadron South African Air Force, and about three hundred were built.”
and:
“The IID was not the only Hurricane to carry the 40 mm S gun. The Hurricane IV, of which over five hundred were built, was introduced in 1943 as a specialised ground attack variant. A more powerful engine enabled more armour to be fitted and it had a “universal wing”, designed to take various armament options including the S gun or rocket projectiles (RPs); the changeover could be made by five men in about forty minutes. Most saw service overseas but three squadrons based in England (Nos. 137, 164 and 184) were equipped with this aircraft.”

Sorry, there wasn’t info about where the plane was from squadron-wise. I just linked it from a website.
Just try finding out about which squadrons operated the Mk.IID in the desert and see if you can’t find info on individual airplanes.

Thanks PhantomII for the pics! The second one is just what I was looking for as it’s a tropical filter version, and the only other one I’ve found was “Our John” BN795 which was a standard version MkIID in desert camo.
Any ideas what squadron that plane is from? 🙂

What internall mounted wing guns did the Mk.IV have?
I read that it was two 7.7-mm Brownings like that of the Mk.IID, the big different being that while the Mk.IID could only carry the two 40-mm gun pods, the Mk.IV could carry either two 40-mm guns or two bombs of up to 500-lb. in size or up to eight 60-lb. rockets.
Kinda like a Mk.IIC and Mk.IID combo.

The Hurri Mk IV could also be armed with the Vickers 40mm guns as an alternative to the RP rails, and many were.

Well to my knowledge the Mk.IID was the only variant to mount the 40-mm Vickers anti-tank guns.
The Mk.IIC was similar, but instead of anti-tank guns it had underwing hardpoints capable of carrying 1,000-lbs. of weapons, including up to eight 60-lb. rockets (same as used by the Typhoon and Tempest I believe).
It was also equipped with four 20-mm cannons in the wings.
