Hi all,
I wonder if you can help out a friend of mine. This is a photo of his father working on an aircraft when he was in the RAF. But we’re not 100% on what it is!! My friend thinks it’s a Hurricane but I think it might be a Spitfire. From what I can figure out, the Hurricane’s only tended to have 3-bladed propellers. The Mk.V Hurricane did have 4 blades but that never made it into full production, plus I don’t think it had 6 exhausts like this photo. A few different Spitfire’s had 4-blades and they also had 6 ‘fishtail’ exhausts, like in the photo.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Glenn

Many, many thanks for all of the posts and the information. I have past it on to David, and I know he is thrilled with the information. I apologise if I seemed suspicious but my intentions were/are genuine 😉
First post on the Forum…but with a quality well presented attachment.
.
I’ll take that as a compliment!
‘GloriousGlenn’ rings of ‘Glamourous Glenniss’ the Yeager P-51.

I use that login for everything, long story as to why, but it’s always available when I need a username, so why not?!!
‘Fishtail exhausts’…using the well known but not official term for a certain Spitfire exhaust stack.
.
Purely from doing some of my own research prior to posting.
With so much of the aircraft in the image I think almost anyone making a basic comparison with any Spitfire or Hurricane image would be able to see this is a Spitfire.
.
To those that know! Which you clearly did, so thank you.
I also have the copy of a letter from two ‘US back packers’ in Australia to a well known US Aviation magazine…’My pal and I are 200 miles NW of Dubbo and have just seen an aircraft land on a remote farm. (Photo of Spitfire in workshop hangar attached). He says it is a Spitfire, I say it is a P-51…can you advise please?
It was of course an Australian wind-up but it initially caused a bit of a stir.
.
If only I had that sort of spare time to waste! My 3 and 7 year olds make sure I don’t have that sort of time!!!
Finally, many thanks for the photo of NH346 of 87 Sqn Campoformido, and a possible unit that David’s father. I’m sure this will prompt him to dig further, and I certainly know where to come if I have any aviation questions.
Cheers
Glenn

There you go, Glenn. That’s info for your friend, which just happens in this case to come from one of the leading, if not the leading, genuine experts on the subject.. I hope that we do hear from you again.

Glorious Glenn. Does David Bown have any more photos of Spits from his dad’s collection?

The weather, and the vegetation, doesn’t look like Coltishall in winter/spring.
Just goes to show how much attention I paid! :dev2:

Try 87 Squadron at Pontedera, Campoformido or Treviso.

That made me smile… Answering at face value however, I was about to say 602 but then checked dates and places, and the problem is they changed away from the LO code in May 45. The weather, and the vegetation, doesn’t look like Coltishall in winter/spring. Does anyone have a list of Spit squadron codes from early 45?

Mark you are such a cynic. 🙂

Why would you be suspicious? I had a friend who had a post on Facebook, he thought it was a Hurricane, I thought it was a Spitfire. I told him I would do some digging for him to try and find out a bit more, so I searched to try and find what seemed like a reputable site to ask the question. Hence my post.
Note the smiley.
Suspicious?

VIII, IX or XVI.
The code letter on the fuselage is an L, by the looks of it. The trailing edge lines – anything to do with dive-bombing?
Looking a bit closer, that upper cowling has a slight bulge. That was on the XVI, wasn’t it? I’ll go out on a limb and say a 602 Sqn aircraft if it is. But that’s it.

Why am I slightly suspicious of this ‘first post’? 🙂

Lines on wing – didn’t the PR Spits have markings on the wings to aid with snapping their pics?
Also, vegetation looks like it has a faintly far eastern feel to it. It’s not B****? 🙂

if it is 1945, and the airfield facilities look temporary, is that perhaps on the continent, Holland, France perhaps ?

Post January 1945 roundel.
Why am I slightly suspicious of this ‘first post’? 🙂

Interesting lines painted on the trailing edge.

Possibly a Mk 8 or 9, but I dare say someone more knowledgable on here than me could tell you for sure.
By: gloriousglenn - 5th September 2015 at 23:10
Thanks. Any idea on what Mk? I know there’s not much to go on in the photo!!

Yes you’re right it’s a Spitfire.
