Hurricane query

I wonder if someone could wrap up an uncertainty of mine for good. That is; is the airframe of the Hurricane MkII different in any visible way excluding armament to the MkI (and specifically around the nose area)? There being numerous model kits of the Hurricane I’d like to know how interchangeable they are. Published measurements differ in between themselves anyway, but although many (not all) seem to agree that the MkII is longer than the MkI, there is no mention of whether this is all in the rather longer Rotol spinner that most MkIIs and later shared.

I know there was initially a gap (‘thrust tolerance’) in between the prop and the cowling of the Watts-propellered MkIs and that this disappeared with Hamilton/DeHavilland/Rotol airscrews – but was this an extension of the cowling or simply the prop making up the difference? Did the ‘oil deflector ring’ add any length? Did the Merlin XX engined marks get any longer with the two-stage supercharger?

I suppose I’m in need of a really good book on the Hurri – any suggestions?

Could well be… I’ve not managed to find a picture that’s close up enough to tell. However, I’m fairly sure these are specific to Sea Hurricanes. Here’s what I mean… See the mark between the ‘7’ and the roundel on the Shuttleworth hurri and the ‘spigot’ thing on the plan above the arrestor hook – I doubt this goes all the way through as it would intefere with the hook jack, but I could be wrong. Over to you…

yep goes through castings on joint Q-Q, it is also for trestling the rear fuselage

Thanks Airbedane. In fact the Shuttleworth Sea Hurricane is one of the aircraft I am intending to model. Can you tell me what kind of propeller/spinner it uses as it doesn’t look like any of the De Havilland/ early ‘blunt’ Rotol/ later ‘pointy’ Rotol that I am familar with. Also, while you’re here, Sea Hurricanes seem to have a pair of round holes in the side of the fuselage just above the root of the arrester hook ‘A’ frame – is this something to do with the catapult attachment? What do they look like up close?

From my time testing the Shuttleworth Sea Hurricane Mk 1B, I seem to remember that the c of g datum was 4″ further forward on the Mk 2 than on the Mk 1. That would make the engine cowling some 4″ longer on the Mk 2 – the c of g datum is a point 6″ behind the lower joint in the engine bearers and coincides roughly with the hand starter dog.

Mk.II’s also had a fractionally larger rudder trim tab,giving the illusion that the trailing edge of the rudder is rounded. Would imagine it also contributes to the increase in overall length.

As Camlobe stated it has a 2 speed supercharger. That said the Merlin is a tad bit longer (3 or 4 inches). The intermediate cowling is longer, the engine bearer main plate is slightly different. The tailwheel is bigger and the tail leg is more beefy on a Mk.II. Very early Mk.Is had fabric covered wings, venturi’s, Watts 2 blade, external armoured screens (which are totally different to the Mk.II, incidentally the Science Museum is the only example to have the external screen). Those are the major differences off the top of my head! There are of course lots of cockpit differences.

Don’t know if it is help or hinderance but I can remember discussing the differences between Mk I and Mk II Hurri’s with a wartime Hurri pilot a number of years ago. Other than the differences forward of the firewall I seem to remember this wonderful gentleman advising me that there were differences with the canopy and windscreen and canopy, so much so that they were not interchangeable. Hope this isn’t just duff gen. Oh, and by the way, not of great importance but the Merlin XX was a two SPEED not two stage supercharger. The two stager’s were a much longer engine incorporating an intercooler as well.

AFAIK on the Mk II the cowling aft of the exchaust stubs and the windscreen is longer than the Mk I.

I remember seing a drawing by master modeler Peter Cooke showing the difference.
