Hurricane R4213 research help required

Hi everyone,
I am conducting some research into a Battle of Britain casualty that took place on the 30th August 1940. This was Hawker Hurricane Mk.1, R4213,
of 151 (F) Squadron, RAF North Weald. After combat over the Thames Estuary, Sergeant Pilot Feliks Gmur (Poland), acting as tail end charlie. Was shot down by enemy fighters. Trying to make for his home base at North Weald, he crashed and was killed at Jacks Hatch, near Epping Green, Essex.
He was later laid to his rest at Epping Green cemetery in the military plot.
Are there any like minded researchers out there that have over the years had a lookat, or photocopied former 151 (F) Squadron pilots from the period, Log Books. I am very keen to learn the individual code letter for Hurricane R4213, DZ- ?. I would greatly appreciate any help on this one – thanks.

Thank you Tangmere1940, I think from memory that J.B. Ramsey went missing on the 18th August 1940 – R4213 did not come onto squadron strength until August 21st, so she most certainly wouldn’t appear in this pilots Log Book, but thanks for the thought.

Hi XH668.
No nothing left of the crash site, she impacted on top of a hedge with the sad remains of the pilot still in the cockpit. The airframe burnt out as well as part of the hedge – the pilots remains being buried at Epping Green Cemetery.

Thanks for the website Melvin.
I can tell you that R4213 was a brand new Gloster built Hurricane that was delivered to 151 (F) Squadron on the 28th August 1940 from number 20 MU.
Lost after just ten days on the Squadron, so I dont expect many pilots would have flown her. Your website lists her serial as LK-O, but this is an 87 (F) Squadron code letter – the fact that she was a brand new aeroplane, I cannot see that she would have worn an 87 (F) Squadron coding. But its a marvellous website and the photographs are of a very high quality and a great tribute to those that paid the highest price for victory.
Trevor.

Thanks Mark V have tried this, to no avail – Dustyone and a posting made back in 2007 appears to be a good thread as this man witnessed the aircrafts demise at the hands of the Luftwaffe . thanks for your help.

Hi Seafuryadic,

We have the code as LK-O,
http://www.aircrewremembrancesociety.com/

Hmm, 151 Squadron aircraft were coded DZ throughout WWII (LK was 87 Sqdn.). There are very few pictures available – I think we discovered only three or four when researching the Fighter Factory scheme (DZ-O) last year. Log-books of the period tend to mention only serials so tying up the code letter and serial number can be a bit challenging. A member on here was researching Polish Sergeant pilots a few years ago and was able to assist us (‘Gretza’).

I have the Logbook for a 151 Sqn Battle of Britain pilot (J B Ramsay) but not sure if it will provide any clues.
