A quick question from a novice. Did either a Hurricane or Spitfire ever use a 38 gallon fuel indicator? I thought the Hurricane was fitted with a 33 gallon indicator and a Spitfire a 37 gallon indicator but I have been told that a 38 gallon indicator was fitted to both types.

The engraving is wrong – it was done in the 80’s by a company who shall remain nameless.
Some original engraved legends were plastic, some were aluminium. None looked like that!

Hello Bruce
Are the ones in Ians link repros?

Ian
the upper one looked better. There seems to be a few of these faces coming up at the moment. The originals have very little actually engraved on them. The red words appeared to be pad printed/similar.
The switch unit has engraving which I dont like.

These just fished on ebay, looked a bit wrong. The G and 3s don’t look like a wartime AM font. Any thoughts?
See your point – but the seller seems certain they are original.

They do indeed fill a hole Tony! Just got around to fitting your temp gauge faces to my panel.

That depends on how much new faces cost!
snip!
Bruce
I do faces for Spits! Also do full replica fuel gauges…fine for static cockpits and stupidly cheap!
Note to Bruce and mods….I am not touting for ‘business’ – other suppliers are available….just suggesting that other options are available!!

The fuel gauge 37 gallon shown is a repro ! The donors still cost around £200 even on ebay.

To answer your first question accurately; the throw and resistance on the gauges is the same; thus, one cannot easily calibrate a 38 gallon gauge as a 35 gallon gauge. At ‘Full’, it will read whatever is on the scale!

There you are – seems a bit daft paying £800 for a hurricane fuel gauge when you can use an anson one just as well…
I wonder what happened to all the drawings for these gauges – did smiths destroy them all?
By: Bruce - 15th December 2010 at 11:29
All of this type of instrument can be used on Spitfires or Hurricanes; just have a new face made. This has been done successfully on many occasions!

If the Anson has a capacity of 38 gallons then from a practical (flying) point of view would it be possible just to recalibrate these for spits/hurricanes?
By: Ken - 15th December 2010 at 08:48
Supermarine in Stoke have a number of fuel gauges including 2 which say on them 36 gallons and dont have as much lettering on them as the pics posted. I will take some pics next time I go

This info is very interesting and usefull for the future. I have been after a couple for the Comet panel but they have all been stated as Spitfire and therefore expensive, this info will help me negotiate better.
In case anyone points out that the Comet had a larger capacity than 38 gallons, the originals on the Comet are this type but recallibrated.

Thought Anson was 35? For your info Spitfire left and Hurricane right although early Spitfires had two fuel gauges.
By: Mark V - 13th December 2010 at 10:35
Presumably by someone keen to sell you one at a premium.
😀 Bruce!

No, 38 gallon is Anson – not Spitfire, not Hurricane.
