Hurricanes flown by Frank Carey 43 Sqn

I would like information about the aircraft markings-marks and models- colour schemes and any peculiarities of aircraft used by Frank Carey. The intention is to build models of several of his aircraft. I do not usually build model planes so any info re most suitable kits techniques etc would be appreciated.

Hurricanes of 43 Sqn., being flown by Frank Carey

just bumping to the top of page, just incase someone happens to have any more info related to Hurricanes of 43 Sqn., being flown by Frank Carey

One reason i would like collect info is that i have parts of the Skinning from Hurrican P3202 and intend to use them in the reconstrution of an Hurrican Aircraft.
i think it would make a fine tribute to have P3202 rise to the skies once again !
Be it in part scale Model Form.

so if anybody has any more info i would be very greatful.

Regards Mark

hi i’m new to this forum, but still a budding fan of aviation, i’m hopping to build a scaled RC model of P3202, and wonder if any body can help me with my research.

I know that on 26th August 1940 P3202 was flown P/O C K Gray ( Gray being new to the 43 Sqn that month ) and he was shot down and the plane crashed Ratham Mill East Sussex.
But what i’ve only just found in this thread is that frank Carey also flew this plane in July just before Gray had joined 43 Sqn at the begining of August, I wonder where one might find a source of such or similar infomation. ?
many thanks for any comment or help

Mark

 On http://www.rafweb.org/SqnMark043A.htm I have found line type colour pictures however these appear to be missing a lot of detail ie no red white and blue rear marking or no serial number shown. The first aircrafts roundels seem to be the older style and the nose is shown brown/black.

The early pre-war markings usually didn’t include a fin flash, which I pressume is what you are refering to as a rear marking.

The brown/black spinner on the first aircraft is because the watts 2 blade prop was often finished in natural wood, hence the representation of a brown colour.

There are better colour plates and modelling detail references available than these.

This is making things a little confusing if not interesting.

My first will be a hurricane bearing the code FT-Y shown in a painting entitled “uneven odds” depicting Carey during BoB 1940 during which he shot down 4x enemy aircraft. If any one knows the serial number that would really help as I cannot make it out on the painting. The kit I will use is a toss up between the revell 1/32 hurricane or the 1/24 airfix kit.The painting shows an all white underside, any advice re the kits or colour would be much appreciated.

Unlikely to be all white  , would almost certainley be all sky underside.
As for the serial it’s almost certainley going to be R4109.

The second aircraft I will do is NQ-B as above assuming this is the aircraft he made his first kill in during the battle of France. The kit I will use is the classic airframes 1/48 early hurricane with the 2 blade prop and fabric wings sporting a black and white underside, again any other specific info would be great re markings etc.

Trying to find out whether L1728 still had the 2 balde prop or whether it had already been converted to a 3 blader is going to be difficult……

John (?)

Now you’ve taken my suggestion on the BoBHS forum, I only hope my friends on here won’t let me down, and can provide the info you’re looking for.

Geoff.
