On the Swiss website, I found out they are offering 7 ERJ-145s for lease! Are they replacing them with the ‘170?

Yep swiss does seem to be quite muddled up carrier at present – hopefully they will get things sorted!

EGNM: True enough, and that’s the way I would do do it. However, the SWISS management has a weird way of doing things. For example, while ZRH is a bigger airport than GVA or BSL (hence maybe a good idea as a hub), ZRH lading charges are more than twice those of GVA and 150% higher than BSLs.
Also, under the original SWISS business model, it was supposed to be a “26/26” fleet, with 26 ex-Swissair and ex-Crossair models. SWISSs current fleet stands at 81 aircraft.
SWISS original model also called for a level of service to rival those of (for example) SIA. And now they’re charging you for anything you eat/drink aboard European flights, having made the 180 degree turn towards a low-cost Euro formula. The truth is, the management don’t know what they’re doing, and oneworld won’t really help much (in fact, it’s actually made things worse in a sense)

actually, Im wondering if the jetmagic planes aren’t amongst that group of ERJs…
apparently the reasoning behind selling the ERJs isn’t so much that they’re bad airplanes. It’s more to do with the fact that SWISS need money and downsizing. For the new(ish) ERJs, they can get a fairly good amount of money…the only other regionals that they have, the Saab 2000s and ARJs would bring them far less money…
I know exactly what you mean, but if Swiss had say 9 aircraft to place there wont be too many companies that would want to lease all 9 at once – therefore if you could get a short term lease on a couple then this would bring in at least a litle income rather than having x amount of aircraft parked up – after all aircraft dont make money sat on the ground!

They are having biiig problems with the ERjs and are trying to offload them ASAP. ERJ170s have been deferred indefinitly.

OK..But are they downsizing from Basle, their roots as Crossair?

I don’t think they will be replaced at all. Swiss does want to downsize so this could be (part) of their strategy to do so.
