I know this is a long shot but…….

Would anyone out there have any idea of the identity of the chap in the photograph?
The photograph came as part of a desk set which has this photo displayed in a brass stand behind a small sheet of perspex. This was mounted on a wooden plinth carrying RAF badges. Either side of the photo, for use as pen holders, are two 20mm cannon shell cases, dated 1942 and 1943. The whole base was thickly coated in matt black paint.
I can see he was an air gunner, but aren’t those wireless operator flashes above his stripes? My only other clues are that he is believed to be a Pole who settled in the Wolverhampton area.
As I said, I know it’s a long shot so it’s over to the detectives amongstyou.

Hope you can help.

RE: I know this is a long shot but…….

Thanks Ant.

I don’t know about him ‘looking’ like a Czech or a Pole. I’ve just noticed he does appear to have a small flash on his right shoulder. I wondered whether the cannon shell casings might be a clue. Were they items that could be picked up almost anywhere or do they perhaps indicate a connection with an aircraft type which carried 20mm cannon? The dealer I purchased the desk set from said it came from a house clearance he did and he was told the house had belonged to a Pole.
The plot thickens.

RE: I know this is a long shot but…….

I’m afraid I can’t give a precise identity for him,but the theory of him being a Pole is doubtful in my opinion.Foreign nationals in the RAF usually wore a shoulder patch bearing the name of thier home country eg Canada,Norway etc etc.The chap in the picture doesn’t appear to have these shoulder flashes.
Having said that he does ‘look’ Polish or Czech,so perhaps this is where the idea originates, and perhaps he is a Pole afterall.
It would be great if someone could firmly identify him.
