I like her voice.

Another sweety with a great voice has arrived, Alexandra Burke, who will no doubt be put down by forum members here as another product of that crappy tv programme.
But do I care?:p
Anyone who watched last night’s XFactor must have been stirred, not shaken, by her duet with Beyoncé.

Whatever anyone has to say about the programme, it occasionally finds good talent.

Alexandra’s performance of the new single, Hallelujah, by Leonard Cohen, is way better than JLS’ version.
It’s almost certain to top the charts for Christmas 2008.
MP3 version is available for download now.

I have to agree with Simon Cowell, who’s favourite Alexandra performance of the series was Candyman.
Skip the intro and judges comments, song, 1:41 to 4:00.

Didn’t see the show – never have -too busy …but read all this thread…..and anyone who believes a statement like this(below) has obviously very little experience of either performing with live music – or of being part of that backing music.

In essence the statement is pure tripe.

I know that, and you know that. 😉

Maybe I should have been more explicit, I was simply trying to say that it makes no difference to the singer’s performance capability.

Maybe you should have said, “Given an inflated opinion of her talent by four idiots and one heck of a lot of the British public.”

What say you Mike?

So, technically, you could say “Given an inflated opinion of her talent by millions of idiots”.

A mediocre talent given an inflated opinion of her ability by an idiot with more money than musical knowledge. I rest my case. No I’m not jealous before you ask, I willingly admit that I can’t carry a tune in a bucket and I’m happy with that. I leave singing to those who, unlike me, are not tone deaf.

As much as i deslike but love these shows… As long as she manages to become a successful artist im happy…

Its the winners who do nothing after which bugs me!

ie.. That Leon Jackson guy.. hes not made it big time compared to the like of that Leona Lewis girl..

My Thoughts :

X-Factor.
Like it or loathe it, it regularly attracts a viewing audience of several million viewers so obviously satisfies a market demand. If you don’t like it….don’t watch it….there’s plenty other things to do on a Saturday night.

Alexandra Burke
Heard her and she can obviously sing. From what I’ve seen / heard of the programme this year, was the best contestant vocally and as such deserves her win.

Hallelujah
Somethings better left as is. Fantastic composition by Cohen and I always like his performances, but the raw emotion of Buckley is hard to beat.

Live Bands / Backing tracks
For me, live band every time and I don’t necessarily agree that it makes no difference to the performers capability. The whole atmosphere of a performance with a live band is hard to beat, and a good artist will use the energy and vibe from a well practised, tight band to take their performance to the next level.

I heard a rumour yesterday that Danni Minouge was going to be replaced with…Robbie Williams!

Let’s hope not, it might ruin his attempts at re-joining Take That, after all, if he joins them again, it might cause new rifts and force Britains ‘Greatest ever Band’ to split up again and then, thankfully, we won’t have to see their smug faces every time we turn the telly on.

I was surprised that Alexandra Burke won the X Factor, it seemed pretty obvious to us from the beginning that the public and judges would fall for the charms of the kid from NI, a smiley face with sinister eyes and a knack of singing flat, rather like the useless Leon Jackson who won it last year on the basis that he was doing it to help his poor widowed mother, sob, sob.
Thats the problem isn’t it, the ungifted one’s were really wringing out the tears and anguish to make sure that the public voted for them, which they did in droves.
Still, at least a decent singer won it this year, though I shall never be able to listen to Jeff Buckley the same way again.
As poor Leonard Cohen had all his money swindled off him by a dodgey manager, it will be a nice little earner for him, I presume that the public are aware that his nicely cynical lyrics are all about sex and not religion, which makes it an interesting Xmas number 1.

I find a lot of irony in the fact that Cheryl Cole, being from a manufactured girl-band, is a judge on the programme….

I’m going to argue with mesen here.
I detest X factor……but the winners of it are usually all talented. 2nd placers too.
But good talent is also lost on the way whilst terrifyingly awful acts are kept in because a lot of voters are thick, and fall for the sympathy angle etc.

Si Cow and the Irishman know what they are talking about, it’s their bread and butter and have become very rich in knowing what they are talking about.
Cole and Minogue are very nice to look at, it doesnt matter what they say.

As for Alex, yes, she is perhaps the most promising winner so far.

Now this is where I do have to disagree with you. I have been to and still love going to see bands/artists playing live, and that is exactly what I pay for and expect to see/hear…personally, for me, a band using a backing track during a live performance that I am attending is a cardinal sin and almost as bad as miming!

Maybe I should have been more explicit, I was simply trying to say that it makes no difference to the singer’s performance capability.

Of course a live band is preferable where possible, every time.

Totally agree with you there Joglo, she deserved to win it, and I wouldn’t say I was ‘stirred’ by her performance with Beyoncé, more like ‘blown away’ by how good it was – loved it!:)

It’s almost certain to top the charts for Christmas 2008.

Whilst your right to highlight this point, and I think this time round it deserves to be at #1 as the song itself is a great song, however, it does somewhat annoy me that the final of such a TV programme as The X-Factor is scheduled to finish just in time for the Christmas #1…makes me think if other big-name artists are actually that bothered nowadays about releasing a song during this period, knowing full well that they probably wont stand a chance of getting to the #1 spot?

I only have one thing to say about your comment ref live band vs backing track and that is, a well rehearsed live band is no different from a backing track

I have absolutely no background in music or singing but regardless, she does have a very good voice. She reminded me very much of the previous female winner and from those performances in the video, I’m sure she’ll have a very successful career in the industry and good luck to her.

Besides, what difference does it make if she’s from X Factor or not? We should be glad there are such programmes on TV that do discover such talent, and no-one is forced to watch them so the haters of them should just accept that these programmes are here to stay (at least in the immediate future).

From my training in singing I would say:

She is talented

She was the clear winner from the beginning of the live shows, she gave constant great performances and in my eyes deserved to be crowned the winner.

She wasn’t tweaked with her look or given a song that was easy for her, she was giving a challenging song to sing each week and done it perfectly!

She always puts her heart and soul into the song she is singing and it gives me goosebumps listening to her.

10/10 for me.

If you can’t accept the opinions of others then you shouldn’t start threads where people will express them.

Does that make him an expert in all musical fields?

As I tried to say earlier, I’ve been there, done it and have the T shirt, but I’m now old enough to see more clearly.;)

Everyone has a right to an opinion, whether or not he/she is a professional musician or a teeny bopper in wherever town?

I know I said my previous comment was to be my final, but I’ve changed my mind.

I have no idea why you feel the need to be so argumentative over this. Of course I’m not an expert in all musical fields; I never claimed to be, but I am an expert in many of them and a certain degree of serious experience will change the way you think about certain things. All I’ve done is simply give my opinion as someone with that experience. If you have been there, done it and bought the T.Shirt, then you should have the experience and maturity to accept my opinion or at least give me an appropriate, well thought out reason why you disagee, which so far you’ve failed to do. In fact, you haven’t actually said anything so far to make me believe you have the knowledge and experience your general tone implies.

At no point have I even vaguely attempted to say you’re wrong, nor have I retorted in a childish manner as if this is some point scoring exercise. All I’ve said is I don’t need to prove anything to you and given the reasons why. Your replies have been riddled with a bitterness that borders on being insulting and you’ve continued in that tone since, including in your latest comment to Arthur. If you can’t accept the opinions of others then you shouldn’t start threads where people will express them. Also, please don’t give me the somewhat patronising “I’ve been there” speech, either. Your attitude and approach is very much not typical of anyone I know who actually has been there and done it, or continues to be there doing it.

As Daz quite rightly says, you are doing yourself no favours.

Paul
