I don’t think that I can be the only one who gets more than a bit tetchy and irritable when I read: “Air attcks on Germany, Bomber Command, Lancaster and controversial” all in the same sentence.
My current copy of Flypast contains this abomination as part of a preview of an article to be published in next months issue. I am aware that there is a lobby of apologists, perhaps primarily on the political left, who will always – on this subject – preach ‘shock, horror’ come hell or high water.
Personally, I do not care about the ‘hand wringers’. The fact that Bomber Command laid Nazi Germany waste from end to end was the only course of action open to the British for much of the duration of the war and it was a correct action. The fact that it was at all necessary can be laid directly at the door of a foul and evil regime. 55,000 souls bear witness. I hope that the Flypast article won’t in any way impugn their memory.

That raises an interesting point…so what about those who do have a right to be here but who abuse the system and make a living from crime…?:)
They should come under the law and be prosecuted for crimes and also punished for abusing the system which is probably fraud based anyway.

As the grand daughter of an RAF World War 2 veteran, I find many of the modern attitudes to RAF Bomber Command offensive and distasteful. It makes me angry.
These people who condemn our brave servicemen never seem to have any condemnation for the Luftwaffe bombings of London, Coventry, York, Hull, Sheffield, Glasgow, Exeter, Manchester, Liverpool, Canterbury, Bath. They all go on about Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg but they casually forget that British cities were attacked before any RAF planes went near Dresden.
My Nan, who lived in Barnsley during the war, used to tell me how she heard bombs dropping on Sheffield and they could see the resulting fires as far away as Barnsley – the apologists never mention anything like that.

No. It is removing those who have no right to be in this country who abuse the system,do not pay their way and make their
income from crime. I don’t believe that anyone is suggesting a final solution as in Germany or maybe the former Yugoslavia.

Totally agree, ohh I wish they could have spent a week in Belsen… One wouldn’t think these arm chair warriors would be spouting this verbiage then….
Same goes for the do gooders going on about immigrants at the moment, I couldn’t care less if they target black, yellow, pink, white or green folks. At the end of the day you SHOULD be targeting the demographic people’s that are abusing the system…
Interesting post!
In one breath you denounce the persecution of the Jews, and others, by the Nazi regime (unless you’re suggesting that the ‘armchair warriors’ should be incarcerated in Belsen for a week?)…
…and in the next breath, without any provocation, you set-out your own solution for our own immigration question; it may not be the final solution but it is a step-in-the-right-direction, yes?
Ten million (or insert the figure that you’re comfortable with) people were not murdered by the Nazis because one lunatic signed a memo; Germany back then was a civilised, educated, scientific, technological, cultured, affluent, democracy and yet these undeniable atrocities were carried out by the German (and other) people…
…of course, we are so different and nothing like that could ever happen here.

Perhaps we do and we take them as read and only get excited by articles about our so-called transgressions. Hindsight judgements are equally invalid whichever side you are/were on.

Funny how we never seem to see articles like that on the Condor Legion’s bombing of Guernica or the Luftwaffe strafing refugees in France and the Low Countries in 1940.

I think my views are well known on the actions taken against the Third Reich.
Tony T I agree with your last post 100%
On a lighter note I hope jim does not see this thread yet or he will be back in Hozzy!:D

Need to see that article, but it sounds similar to USA apologizing for using the A-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The interesting part is Japanese historians say it was the correct decision. True it is very tragic and horrible, but a prolonged war would have been worse, no?
War is hell, and lasts for a very long time.

There is no point targeting white kilt wearing Scotsmen when your trying to deport illegals from Somalia, Nigeria, Afghanistan etc etc…
I am NOT being racist, simply a realist..
This country turns my stomach when you see how the PC crap is being rolled out…. And those winging about the vans trundling around saying we will arrest you… Do it and deport them the same day, if they do not wish to see these vans, well f@:; off home

Hi All,
My problem with it all is that all these so called apologists tend to quite conveniently forget all about the City bombed over here Glasgow ?(Correct If I am wrong please) Manchester/Liverpool/Hull/Birmingham/Coventry/London and others also not forgetting other major city’s in Europe plus all the terror the ground campaign wrought in destroying city’s as well but that’s another thread.
Geoff.

Hand wringing apologists with hindsight serve no purpose at all. Decisions in war are taken on the basis of the prevailing situation not on the basis of how the situation might be analysed decades later.
