Indian Air Force C-130J Super Hercules Aircraft crashes

Gwalior: One C-130J Aircraft of the IAF crashed 72 miles west of Gwalior airbase on 28 March 2014. “The aircraft was airborne from Agra at 1000 hrs for a routine flying training mission. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate into the cause of the accident,” said tha IAF release.

4 IAF Garud commandos are reportedly dead in the accident.

The multi-role special operations aircraft C-130 J was recently used during the search for the missing Malaysian airliner MH 370. The type has also used in relief operations after the Uttarakhand floods. The type has successfully landed at Daulat Beg Oldie near the border with China and Andaman Nicobar base.

6 C-130 J’s were recntly purchased from United States under FMS program at a cost of up to US$1.059 billion

In July 2012, the U.S. accepted India’s request for the six more C-130Js through the FMS program. On 20 December 2013, India’s CCS approved the order for 6 more aircraft
