Back in the photo vaults to 1992 now. I’m pretty sure that Fairford’s runway was being resurfaced, so the IAT shifted to a sweltering Boscombe Down. Again this was back in the days of some amazing airshow variety, added to be the Confederate Air Force B-24 “Diamond Lil” (in glorious, glossy pink) on her European tour, and the arrival a matter of weeks before of the Fighter Collection P-38, which had yet to be painted and detailed as “Happy Jack’s Go Buggy”.
Enjoy, and please comment,
Mark

Great photo’s, they have brought back some good memories. Thanks.

nice memories though, got any more?
I’ve just scanned Biggin Hill from the same year and Fairford from ’91, which also featured some gems. I’ve got shots back to ’88 so will scan an post some more over the coming weeks.
Aces High – you’re very welcome! It gives me the perfect excuse to trawl through my old photos!
It’s funny how airshows then were different in feel to now, and with the remaining Cold War aircraft there was far more variety. I love the detailed restorations today, but can still remember the sheer thrill of seeing that P-38 for the first time, and the pink glossiness of Diamond Lil was something I’d only seen in photos and never dreamed would cross the Atlantic for a summer.

Beautiful captures, love the nose art, and pinup style. Thanks for sharing Mark. 😀

Did they not have to rapidly freight an engine out from the US?

The Mossie crashed in 96!!! Blimey, that’s 20 years ago 😮
I can remember waiting at North Weald for the B24 to turn up and it never showed. Had a blown engine.

I remember it well – partly for getting sun-stroke and falling asleep during the fast jets but also for the variety and displays. A great show.
I still have all my photos from the event in print form.

Nice shots.

I did like Boscombe, and it always seemed easier to get in and out of, not being hemmed in by country lanes. I always found, though, that for photography you always seemed to be shooting into the sun.

I thought the IAT alternated between Fairford and Boscombe Down, 1992 was the last time it was held at BD for whatever reason but having attended both I felt the layout of the runways at Boscombe made for a better display of static aircraft and merchandise stalls.

You are welcome – I have older, I’ve been photographing airshows since the 80s so will post a variety.

Great pics. The oldest aircraft. If you don’t share, I’ll never see them.
Thanks :p

I was in Australia for a year in ’96, and was almost glad I was. The footage of the P-38 at Duxford was all over the TV news there, but I still remember two weeks later hearing the words “airshow crash” and “Mosquito” and getting that awful sinking feeling, and I still feel for the loss of the aircraft and the unfortunate crew now. I didn’t realise until I’d scanned the photos that Spencer Flack’s beautiful Sunny VIII had also been lost in an airshow crash in the States. At least we have memories of amazing days like the above to remind us of the good times.

Hi Growler,
More great pictures. Thanks for sharing. I think I’m going to have to go up into the loft to see what pictures I have left from that era. Lost loads of pictures when a roof slate came adrift and rain came in – straight onto the box with all my pictures. I lost hundreds of rare photos. S**T happens as they say!
TTFN,
Neil

Finally a poignant shot of six aircraft no longer on the UK air show scene:
Mustang “Sunny VIII”, then owned by Spencer Flack, exported to the States and crashed 1995.
Spitfire XIV RM689, crashed at Woodford a mere two weeks later. Rebuild is now well advanced.
P-47D “No Guts No Glory”, exported to the USA.
P-38J “Happy Jack’s Go Buggy”, crashed at Duxford July 14 1996.
Mosquito RR299, crashed two weeks later July 28 1996.
B-25D “grumpy”, exported to the USA.
