ID of aircraft fragment found on Rhodes

A few years ago, while wandering round the former Italian aerodrome known as Calato (Kalathos in Greek) I found a small section of aircraft alloy with no markings but traces of bluish-grey paint. In September 1942, a small SBS party raided the airfield, planted charges and blew up a large number of aircraft. SM 84s are known to have been included and possibly Ju 88s. The piece I found was on the top of a hill overlooking the site from the west. There was a slit trench nearby which must have taken some digging in that rocky terrain so possibly a soldier had taken it as a souvenir and dropped it there. A long shot, I know, but the depth of knowledge on this forum is often astounding!

Interesting find!

It isn’t helpful, but the colouring certainly puts me very much in mind of something Italian. And I’m fairly certain it isn’t Ju 88!
